fuel system problem

just bought a bx16 trs 1988 carb model. driving home was terrible in that when trying to accelerate smoothly from any speed engine missfired and needed revs boosting to pick up again. maybe carb problem but would appreciate any comments before dismantling. dave

I'm not good on petrol's but check inside the distributor cap for a build up of crud on the backs of the plug lead contacts. I had a similar problem once.

Steps I would look at when buying a new car (petrol as that what I always own

)

No matter what the previous owner has told you is change Spark P;lugs, Check and Replace Distributor Cap and check and replace Rotor Arm in Disy cap.

Also check the vacuum hose is attached to the carb and has no splits or air leaks. I would take a guess tht this could be the issue?

Last thing to consider is stripping the carb. Both my BXs are bitches to start after long standing or cold butones a bit more hesistant on running until its warmed up. Unfortuanately its the nature of ther beasts with carb models unless you can get hold of a decent recon weber.

thanks for both swift replies to problem with acceleration. thorough checking around distributor revealed need for new dist cap.car now fine and thankfully not had to get at carburator which i thought might be fault

Should be a simple job, right? That's what I thought when I started the task before tea one evening, on our new Discovery. Hmmm, the rotor arm appears to be on quite tightly, looks like it hasn't been changed for a while from its condition. Bit more force and the whole distributor shaft comes upwards about an inch. Bugger.
The two parts of the distributor shaft had separated, the springs for the advance weights had popped off and were jangling around inside the body and although the top part of the shaft would push back down, it was able to rotate freely through about 180° and the engine would not start. (By this point it was starting to go dark and I was hungry).
It could have been worse, at least I had a spare engine I could raid the distributor off, but I still had to set no. 1 cylinder to TDC, and hope that it was on the compression stroke and not the exhaust. I then pointed the rotor arm on the replacement dizzy to roughly 30° away from no. 1 plug lead position (it's driven from a helical gear so the shaft rotates as you are pushing the dizzy back on), managed to start the engine and reset the timing with a stroke light. How can a simple job go so badly?!

Just thought I would share this tale as a word of warning, and also for the amusement of others...

I'm more relieved to know it's not just me that cars hate.

I swear that, whenever I go into the garage late at night and alone (this never happens if anyone's else is with me), there's a low pitched sound that sometimes comes from over where the bikes are parked in a dim corner.

I fitted new plugs and leads to this car before you bought it Dave so they wont need changing.

Turned out that someone had put diesel in by mistake
