BX seats: durability or comfort?

Post by DLM »

Tom and I have a long-running conversation topic: what's the most comfortable BX seat type?

We're both of the opinion that the non-bolstered, tweed-covered R/TR/TG seats are by a considerable margin the most comfortable, though the cover materials don't last. They're not that dissimilar to CX seats, though not quite as soft.

The more bolstered, velour-covered type in DTR/Z/GTi, while lasting longer, are more wearing to sit in, particularly on long drives. I've never sat in 16v seats, which are also velour-covered, so can't give an opnion on them.

I don't like the back of the velour seats, because the bottom bolster on the seat back pushes you forward, gives you a bent back, and fails to give support further up the back, or on the shoulders. It seems like the majority of BXs now have the velour-covered seats - but is it just because these covers last better?

Opinions, anyone?

the original seats in my 1.7TGD hatchback were probably the most comortable I`ve ever tried. They were crap looking and almost certainly poverty spec but wonderfully comfortable.
Also if you can persuade the seats from a Pug 405Ge (mingebag model) to fit they are also incredibly comfortable.
I`m getting used to the TZD type seats but the poverty spec models are definately more comfortable though also seem less hard wearing.
Personally I`d put the poverty spec seats in and bin those stupid bloody hex bolts/allan key fittings and replace with proper screws/bolts so you can whip them out again when you come to replace them.

Which is exactly what I did. There needs to be a source of the later material, or something like it to retrim the old tweedies. They tend to look a little tatty but I wouldn't give a thank you for the bolstered seats.

THE most comfortable BX seat has to be the 16v cloth type.

I found the tgd type comfy but much too soft and no support.
The tzd/gti absolute crap.

That leaves the 16v velour hip hugging with just the right amount of support for my ever increasing arse.

The minus point because they are made of synthetic material, I'd get an almighty shock when I closed the door after getting out.

I shall miss my BX

I prefer the velour seats after i replaced my grey tweed seats, there was nothing wrong with them i am just updating my interior but i can now honestly say my bad back is more cumfortable in the velour seats but i do agree they make you sit forward a bit more but that is fine for my humped back.

The original seats from my old 1987 19RD were so comfortable I kept them! Going to put them in the Morris. One day...

i guess it depends on your version of comfort!

The old 19rd seats where sublime, they sucked you into a world akin to the inside of a marsh mellow! I hate them!

Following in from a car crash many years ago i have something of a buggered up back, its okay if it has the right support, painful other wise. I like the side bolsters on the 16v seats, the adjustable lumbar support and so on, but the leather is a nice mix of support and squishy stuff!

As a definative answer i think my favourite are . . . actually i cant dee-side, somewhere between the 16v and the GTi!

Having directly compared the early 16V seats with the later seats, the later 1991 on (Le-mans?) seats seemed more comforable than the earler grey black striped version.

Has anyone else found this?

1991 XM leather front seats are wonderful, Vanny said they will fit in a Bx too.

Leather GTI seats, nice but cold, good lumbar support, I could sit there all day, Velour GTI seats, nice, the most comfortable, probably the crumbling beige ones from my MK1 19RD.

Never had a problem with the GTI/TZD seats in fact I think they're very comfy and seem to last forever.Once drove to gatwick airport and back,a round trip of 4-450 miles and had no problem apart from my pounding head cos it was January 2nd 2000

16v velour seats all day long....its no contest.

I wouldn't argue much of a case for the leather.....they're cool and feel special but being based on the GTi seats they're a fair bit flatter with less support.

I liked the 16v seats so much, that they live on in the estate

Can anyone direct me towards a pic that shows the seat back on a 16v? Just intrigued to see what shape they are, and if they've "got the hump" or no.

They are lumber adjustable too, you can squeeze the side bolsters in.

Thats the estate with the Monza trim in its workhorse days. Bernies has the Le Mans trim.
