Insurance

Post by SteveM »

get the new estate tomorrow, got acouple of insurance quotes going for classic limited mileage 3k, they all seem to be coming out around 140 which I thought was steep.
Google just brings up the usual suspects, just wondering nare there any good deals about.

I did post a message about Insurance on the other thread but thought it would be better here.

Sorry !!

Cheers

Of course it all depends upon your personal history but that doesn't seem out of control, although the agreed mileage is quite low.

I usually start with Adrian Flux, but there is no substitute for patience and a couple of hours with the phone. My current "classic" is a very high performance Mitsubishi VR4 and Lynbrook Insurance have got me by far and away the best deal I good find with Equity Red Star - they seem to be one of the biggest players in the game.

Like most good or lucky  drivers (having only made one claim in 38 years) I find insurance incredibly frustrating and infuriating. I am fastidious about honestly securing the appropriate cover and yet still feel vulnerable to every chav and scrote with a boom box and pustules who wants to impress his bird. :x

Now off high horse! Good luck.

Mine are with either foot man james or lancaster on classic policies, I pay about £120-£150 per car so at £140 seems fair.

Some do multicar policies.

I've an 82 Volvo 343, 86 Reliant Rialto, 69 Reliant Regal. All on one policy £103. Comp / Recovery / Euro / UL mileage. Footman James. YMMV. I paid pretty much the same for the last 5 or 6 years whether I've had 1, 2 or 3 cars, sometimes with mileage restrictions, sometimes without.

Strange case of more is less. :P

As a very satisfied customer i'm also going to sing the praises of Footman James! I took a policy out with them in 2003 when i purchased my 2CV, added the Dyane on 2007 and added the BX just three weeks ago. The total cost for covering these three cars until renewal in May 2011 is £135 plus the £20 admin cost of adding the BX. (The cost has come down by a few pounds over the past seven years unlike the Xantia's policies). Insuring the BX on a 'normal' policy was going to be c.£300 and unaffordable for me right now.

Good value cover and staff at FJ have always been friendly and helpful.

Have you sorted anything out yet SteveM?

As a P.S. to that last post;
I phoned a local broker and asked if they did classic policies and they said yes. The receptionist asked what the car was "it's a 1991 Citroen BX" i said and she came back with the reply that they couldn't cover that. On asking why, she said it wasn't a classic so i asked what was their definition of a classic ...... "well something you'd take to a show". I decided there wasn't much point in carrying on with that phone call!

But i'm off to a classic car show in Mosney, just north of Dublin on Sunday :D

I thought AXA were more reasonably priced than that. Does Carole Nash not offer good rates? I think i've seen their ad in Irish Vintage Scene.

Any chance of you coming up to Mosney with the GS on Sunday? We'll be having a hydraulic gathering even though i'm organiser of the 2CV club over here (Northern Ireland Tin Snails; NITS for short!). There'll be a CX, XM, BX and possibly a DS

AXA and Carole Nash are probably reasonable (as far as prices down here are) if it's a second car and goes out on Sundays only :P

Product choice is limited here, no competition either. I know the driving standard is pants here, but really, the insurance is sky-high.

That 500 was after moaning. And it's for maximum NCD too. The UK end of things fortunately doesn't have/need/accrue a NCD.

Mosney? Well can I just turn up? PM me details. I really don't know whether I'm coming or going at the minute. Work rang up this afternoon (First time in 5 months) so I might be working at short notice. However, if I'm not, I'd be up for it.

board.ie is down at the minute, so Googled.

20 quid?

What is "show quality" by the way? Does it include "show quality" gaffer tape and "show quality" torn seats? :P (Now you know why I don't do shows much)

Macplaxton you have a PM with contact details.

Sorry for the delay in replying but yesterday was spent sorting out the Xantia which, no thanks to The AA, had been sitting in a carpark since dropping its clutch pedal on Sunday night :x Reminds me, i must make a (written) third complaint to them!

Sent PM but it's sitting in my Outbox for some reason! So......

Yes, you can turn up and enter but it'll cost €20 (pre-booking was €10). As regards what 'show quality' means, i don't really know .... i guess as long as there's more metal than gaffer tape makes it ok! Laughing Seriously though, it obviously needs to be road legal but many turn up in need of cosmetics so it doesn't have to be concourse condition - my Dyane never was! I've seen pics of your brown GS on CCC Forum and that would be perfect.

We plan to leave Newry at 9.30/45 to arrive by 11.00, picking up the DS en route, and get parked up together.

If you're free to come along it would be great to see you there. We'll be bringing a barbeque and food as an added incentive!

My contact details are in the shop page of the Citroenian.

Thanks Roger. Finally got your PM, but I didn't get an email notification of it to prompt me to look. Strange.

We'll see if the phone rings today or not.

Cheers,
Rich

Anyway, back to insurance, just had an AXA renewal for €571
