Cheap runabout or someone, shame about the paintwork, ive got some plastic gel conditioner would work wonders on that front bumper

Alot of miles for a little TU engine though, are they pretty tough?.

The 14RE that my father is running has only done 51000m but ive been borrowing it and have noticed that the gearbox is already getting a little noisey. It may be the final drive as it seems to be present in all gears?
So with this many miles it could be getting fairly tired, having said this it cant be puffing clouds of smoke as its just passed its MOT?

Your dads car will have the older gearbox in sump "suitcase" engine, the noise you mention quite normal and was like that from new.

From late 1988 the new 1.4 TU engine (as fitted to AX/ZX/306 etc) replaced that set up, performance and economy are the same but it is alot better drive and much smoother.

Thats a rare beast then, must have been one of the very lats RE models before changing over TGE spec. My 14TE did have a bit of transmission wine and that had only done 65000 miles, drove fine though, probably just part of its "character".

I can vouch that the whine Tims on about, as i now own that car, in the TU engine 14's it is normal.

All my AX's and TU BX's have had that slight whine. its normal sir :)

Hi All. I just joined up after buying this car! I needed some transport in a hurry after my GS Estate broke it's rear subframe, and my Landie is point blank refusing to even run after being parked up for a year.

Yes, there is a bit of transmission noise, but as it changes gear nicely (once I got used to the clutch!) I'm just monitoring it at the moment. There is also a slight squeak from the front rh strut which I am keeping an eye on, and an occasional clunk from the rear when pulling away, about which I can't make up my mind as to the cause as I cannot replicate it when stationary. The engine is leak and rattle free, and although I can't say if it is operating at full strength, it definately has more bottom end grunt than the GS, although it needs both that and the 5 speed box as it doesn't seem as happy to rev - the GS almost seems to beg for more revs right up past 5k rpm!

Overall, I'm very pleased with it. It did the 100 mile trip home with no problems, mainly on motorway or duel carriage way at 70mph or thereabouts, & has now totalled around 200 miles in my ownership, on less than 1/2 a tank of fuel if the guage can be believed.

The original plan was to keep it a few months while restoring the GS, then sell it in the spring, but if the economy I'm seeing proves to be correct and nothing major breaks, I may end up keeping it for the local commute to work, leaving the GS to do the long trips as it seems to prefer them.

All the best.

What sort of economy are you getting ? I find My 14TE isnt that great, too short a 5th gear in my opinion.

And it 'should' rev-out pretty well, not in GS 4 pot territory but they are quite 'peppy' if that makes sense.

Good luck with the car and keep us posted

Another one in Gloucestershire!
Odd how I never see any of them!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

The 14 should do about 50 on a run I expect plus with cheap tax and low insurance makes an affordable modern classic. Plus the 14 engine was available in loads of cars so should be easy to maintain I expect.

I'll let you know later in the week what the fuel consumption is - so far I've done 230 miles on just over 1/2 a tank according to the guage.

I've tracked the knock in the rear to an exhaust clamp hitting the rear sub frame, so I'll have a go at moving the the clamp this weekend.

As for the engine revving, it probably does rev well compared to other conventional engines, but it may just seem otherwise to me as I rarely let the engine drop below 2500in the GS when on the move, and never below 2k!

I do have plans to improve the paint finish on parts of the car, and to sort out the odd bit of broken or tatty trim, so I'll keep you posted on progress.

I don't see many BX's on the road around here either. I know of a couple of people in Stroud with at least 3 each, plus my local friendly specialist has at least 3, but most of these are off the road, and in some cases have been for many years. The only other ones I've seen on the road recently is a silver RD Estate, although I've not seen it for a couple of months now, and a GTi in Bristol which used to belong to a friend of mine until he replaced it with a ZX.

All the best
