I'm sure there's an opportunity for one of you guys with some mechanical nous to put together some kits for sale - how much do pleidays charge to refurbish a strut these days?

I have a few kicking about should you need one mate.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Thanks Doc

I just found it - it's the one that I didn't rebuild properly the first time around. I've got the special tools now - set of sliders and drivers - so should go better this time around, if I can work out where the third seal goes.

Right, puzzled it over and worked out what each part of the special tool kit is for. Two internal gaskets, the pinion unit, and one of the sliders are in the freezer to cool down and contract, although I don't know whether -15 will make a huge difference.

We use liquid nitrogen at work, so if you're still struggling I may be able to help...

Pop some in the post to me, would you?

Does anyone have any spare vacuum around that I could borrow, as well?

How's the fix going Oscar? I don't understand even what the fdv is, let alone the need to freeze the "sliders", but I have a club hammer if you would like some help?

The internal gaskets are on the spindle, and the external ones are in the body. The spindle and gaskets are now in the freezer for the gaskets to contract back to their proper size.

I won't be able to mount it for a couple of weeks, so we won't find out until then whether I've been successful this time or not. Fingers crossed...

I was meaning that if it's just a case of doing a spot of shrink fitting, you could post the bits to me and I could press them in...see how it goes at -18 deg C!

Matt that's a kind offer. I thought you were being funny, my apologies.

I may very well do that - the gaskets are not shrinking back into their grooves. I have jubilee clips on 2/3 at the moment as the Japanese site says that they need to be compressed to fit. One of them seems to be shriking slightly, the other two not really.

This is probably stupid, but couldn't you go at it the opposite way, i.e. boil the casing in oil to expand it?

No, the gaskets expand to get over the various ridges on the spindle, then are supposed to contract back down again. Taking their time though. Pop around if you like and I'll show you.

Can't today Oscar - got things that I've been avoiding doing now needing to be done asap

Plus I'd have to ask to have a go and that's probably be the end of it!

Though photos might be good for other's like myself to see, if you have time.
