Advice on Accelerator Cable / Throttle please

Post by Simon B »

Great day .. my BX GTi 8V flew through the MOT today with not a murmur. No advisories, just complements. :D

So I thought I better show it some attention, and have a look why the accelerator pedal seemed a bit stiff. There was certainly an issue with sound insulation fouling the pedal, but then I looked at the other end at the throttle, and was intrigued to see there seemed to be a choice of 2 routes/layouts. There is a higher and lower receptacle for the cable outer, and a front and rear groove on the quadrant. It looks like the higher route lines up lines up with the front groove, the lower route with the rear groove. This is re-inforced as the front groove stops stops earlier than the rear groove.

My car seemed confused as to where the cable should be, as the outer is in the lower fitting but the cable inner running in the front groove on the quadrant. This confusion was confirmed as the inner had actually crossed over mid-way. I put the inner back in the front groove where it starts, but it does look to be pulling across, so I am inclined to move the inner to the rear groove.

So could anyone shed light on why there seems to be 2 alternative routes, and which should I be using? (Does it alter the feel of the throttle? The geometry does not look that different :? Or is to to cope with different air intakes?)The current alignment does not seem happy. Haynes does not appear to mention this.

I'm not sure (I'll check the BX tomorrow) but it might be something to do with kickdown on an auto?

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

As phil and Doc says the other bit is for the kickdown cable, if you look at the picture you can see where it comes would come in from the top. You could always try swopping it over and seeing if that makes an difference.

Could be worth trying some lubricant whilst your at it.

Make sure your pedal box isn't split or breaking, and that the pedal is firmly mounted on it. Then take the cable off and lube it with a mix of grease and wd40. I'd do that before altering the routing. It's not a big job.

Yes, I had seen numerous reports of "cracked pedal box" on the forum when I was searching this topic. It looks/feels OK to me, although the accelerator pedal seems quite sloppy on its shaft, and the first bit of pedal travel is mostly the pedal twisting slightly on the shaft (the shaft seems rigidly attached to the pedal box). Is there a bush/bearing that has worn and could be replaced?

There's a bolt - check it is done up tightly. Check the box for cracks in the corners too.

Do autos suffer less from cracked pedalbox syndrome? I'm assuming so, as there's not the repeated clutch operation, which I'd imagine is the biggest of the problems - accelerator is fairly light, and brake in the middle....

Just a thought....
