But it used to be easy to drop 100k off a 3 year old company car before its 1st MOt by throwing the original service book away.I had a 2001 Xantia 1.8SX which was showing 78k,but an old Mot was discovered showing 214k !

Quite right Richard.
I think the word "ebay" sets the alarm bells ringing in my brain...
Good luck if anyone does go for it. I'm sure as a day-to-day car, and with a bit of fettling it would make a good car. But then it probably still would with 170 000 on the clock if it's been cared for.

It's a little worrying if the 'lack of power' is a actually a drive problem of the automatic box, could just as easily be sticking caliper, who knows without looking but it still has a lot of potential and I agree with Richard that the mileage could very easily be genuine especially if that paintwork is original.
I've still not ruled it out yet although it would deffo cause marital / parental problems if it turned up here

The BIN was £250, which if 70 or 170k is cheap. Looking at the pictures its very similar in "age" appearance to my GTI auto, which is good asides the peeling bumper strips, and the odd age related mark. The mileage on that is 77k and is guaranteed with history and old MOT's.
Its lack of history doesnt put me off but does effect its terminal value to me.Its easy to forget as these cars get older but they were the 1st main stream Citroen to be purchased as "company cars" instead of Sierras and Cavaliers. In fact the 16RE brochure was aimed directly at the company car buyer.
I used to be in the second hand car industry and it was standard practice to buy 3 year old motorway hacks with 100+ on ,only to give them a trim(not me but many people i met at auctions in fact the auctioneer used to make a joke of it).It used to be dead easy to freshen up a car with new pedal rubbers and even change the steering wheel(harder now with airbags etc) but the windscreen can tell a story.Lots of tiny chips that light up in car headlamps and excessive wiper marks etc.Not many people can be bothered changing a screen, bonnets can be blown in.
Why buy a diesel only to pootle to the shops in it? the extra purchase value over a petrol car doesnt get covered in lower fuel costs over a low mileage anyway?
Right Im getting off my soapbox now and going for a ciggy.

I bought two ex Motability citroens - one was an auto - had done less than 30k in five years, the other, a manual, had done 25,000 in four - that's a very good reason for autos to have low miles.

Fiat Punto Cabriolet
Messerschmitt Kr200

Fiat 126 Bis
BX-less at the moment!
You normally find the smaller autos do lesser mileage than their manual counterparts being historically bought by older people who do less miles and prefer the auto box. But you do get the odd one (Phils GTi for instance) that isnt.
You rarely find a mondeo/bx/vectra etc auto that was originally a company car due to purchase costs/fuel economy so tend to have lower mileage.

Now this doesn't make sense to me - the ignition is obviously on otherwise all the lights would be off. And if he's saying the engine is off, then why aren't the oil pressure, coolant level and charging warning lights illuminated?

Or he could have just popped it into high that can make the lights come on briefly...
Might be an idea to ask for his father's number to discuss the history? This chap doesn't seem too au fait with Citroens (Oh - listen to yourself Steven )
EDIT: I say he but I almost got a feel it's the daughter rather than the son selling the car (if it is actually either )
EDIT2: Feeling, not feel of course - that comes only with a test drive

Thought the illuminated red light on the left was engine oil pressure light which illuminates briefly when starting or when oil pressure is low?
