I'd say it looks better than many. But £500 is pushing it. Mine I think are better (biased, maybe? ) and the one previous owner 'FSH' black one with 110k on it is still worth less - I think (!) than that!

I concur Phil yours is lovely, have you replaced that clock bulb yet? Its only 2 screws and a 50p bulb!

Being a GTi the insurance wont be cheap (unlike a nice diesel!!!!) so teh cheap car you bought doesnt turn out to be that cheap! Plus £170 tax and it soon mounts up! and 25-30mpg so you see a nie 19D would defo be a better bet!

Thanks Tim - well it's not as simple as I thought - although you can't see it, at some point in its life the tray has been superglued together and there is some black insulating tape holding it up I think... So, I'll get a replacement tray - and also shell out on a new bulb. If I can afford it :D

Tray thingy to be precise. You know, where the clock is and it's got bobbles over it and it is pretty useless for putting anything other that a book of stamps on it!

I`d have thought £500 was probably pretty reasonable to an enthusiast at least. I`m with Ken though in thinking he quite possibly won`t get that amount.
Insurance, with the exception of the under 23`s, shouldn`t be that bad and you could maybe get a classic/low mileage policy for it. What attracts me to petrol versions is they seem to be getting rarer and maybe, just maybe, they`re now owned by more enthusiastic owners rather than someone just wanting a car that does 50 odd to the gallon. These cars are quite often just thrashed/neglected/abused until they cost to much to repair or re-MOT and end up getting scrapped.

Well, chaps - I'm impressed - thanks for thinking of that. Yes, I will need a new one in black - having just seen the broken screw holes in the tray (yes it is the thing on top of the dash with the clock in it)... Funny, I never noticed that before!

If you do find a decent one let me know what you want for it... don't forget the P&P...

We lavish care and attention on these old cars, hopefully the return we get will be years and miles of enjoyable and relatively trouble free motoring, my TZD was only about £150, then about £300 worth of parts and heaven knows how much labour, If I were to sell it would I get my investment back? I very much doubt it as Tim can testify, mind you If I were running a newer car depreciation would be taking a slice every year and for my £450 I have already had two years motoring si I think I am winning overall.

I`m with you on that Stewart. I`m still running my £150 estate 6 months on from buying it. OK, it`s had more than it`s fair share of problems but it just won`t die and the performance gets better every day.
Makes me feel sorry (for a millisecond) for those people who buy brand new cars `because they need something reliable` then promptly lose about 6 years worth of BX`ing just by driving it out of the showroom.
