Citroen BX 16 GTI 8v (XU5JA)

Post by PinhU »

Hi to all,

my name is Rui and i'm the owner of a rare BX 1.6 GTi's, only sold in some markets.
The car has got a XU5JA 1.6 8v 115hp, the same engine used in the 205 GTi.

The car has been left in a field for 8 years stopped. I bought it and started a small restoration to assure it could run again in the streets.

The major problem that i need to resolve is the brake doseur, that is releasing pressure and the car is very sloppy under braking.
I was thinking about refurbishing my doseur has seen in http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6351 . What do you think?

Best Regards

Olá, bem-vindo.

Have a good look through BXClub postings - I think the doseur from the Xantia can be used if you would prefer to get a new one instead of refurbishing the original one.

It's a 1.6 and fitted with aircon? How does the car feel when the compressor kicks in or is it now non-functional?

Is the sloppy braking really the doseur? If its been in a field for 8 years your discs are probably very badly corroded and require replacement. Corroded discs dramatically reduce braking response! :)

Way2go, it's a 1.6 with standard aircon that is now non-functional.

I do really think that the sloppy braking is caused by the doseur, because the discs have been checked and seem ok!

That's a nice unusual BX there!

Has anyone done this? It would be good to know whether this is the case.

It's not that hard to repair the original doseur. The hardest part is removing the thing - especially if it's been sat in a field for 8 years. You might have to cut the hydraulic lines off and replace if they are heavily rusted around the unions and two of the pipes are very long and complicated . But perhaps Portuguese fields are not so damp and the unions on the doseur will open with just some rust loosener?

I am repairing my doseur at the moment. All the seals are still available for the later model doseur from Citroen ( like on your GTI) and the one seal that is unavailable for the earlier version can be replaced with a viton seal of approx the same size.

16GTi, not heard of that one, its is said that the 16 with the injection as 205/309 is a much sweeter and revvier unit than the 19.

Lovely car, welcome to the forum!
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Yes, more than once, and an XM doseur.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Well, i'm trying to diagnose a little problem that i already talked about in here. The sloppy braking.

Well, the car is sloppy under braking, and doesn't seem that the problem is from the doseur.
It looks like some other problem.
Other thing that i would like to fix is the ticking from the HP Pump, every 5 seconds.
The accumulator sphere has been changed, but it doesn't fixed the problem. There are no visible leakages.

Best Regards and sorry for my bad english,

Rui

Hi Rui - there's nothing wrong with your English, it's actually better than wot some of us natives speak. :D

You might get a better response to your brake problems in the technical forum. I've noticed mine getting a bit sloppy too of late... but I won't go there

My own complete guess would be air in the system. Have you tried bleeding it, including the brakes (I think I'm right in believing that the brakes might need bleeding in addition to the rest of the hydraulics if there was an opportunity for air to get into those parts of the circuit).

I'm afraid I'm not very technical so I'd ask others for more knowledgeable advice.

Isn't there some sort of ball that might need re-seating where the accumulator sphere goes? Not sure exactly how that works myself, so if its that, then hopefully a more learned club member can explain what to do to check it & how to re-seat it. If that doesnt cure it, perhaps you've been unlucky & just got a duff accy sphere even if its a new one?

Well, i've been testing and after some 5 "push ups" (full up followed by full despressurization) the High Pressure Pump stops clicking every 5 seconds, and the brake gets OK.

The ABS Light appeared in the dashboard, and a small leak has been found in the hydraulic arm of the steering, in the return nipple.
I already have the return nipple, and in the next month i will take the car to a Citroen specialist.

The car has been in a "so called" Citroen Specialist, i have payed 1500€ and the car came with a lot of work to do. Garagem Albino in Portugal is just no good for BX's.

Well, the BX is now back from the second major repair.
The BX received:
-New Spheres on the back;
-New filters in the LHM deposit;
-New LHM.

Next week i will apply a new ABS ECU. And i'm sourcing a specialist to repair my HP Pump.
