gear lever knob

Post by johnbird »

my bx has a rather sad looking small plastic appendage on the end of the gearstick.it apparently was put there by the manufacturer.i feel sure there must have been a cock up on the build sheet and someone was tasked to fit a coat hook end to my car.its about the right size.i cant think anyone who got paid to design a tactile cabin came up with this piece of black plastic?
is there an alternative i can fit please? i seek not the chavtastic shiny flashing chrome sort of gear knob but simply a more tactile-larger?-not plastic?appendage. leather or wood?can the coat hook end be removed easily?
thanks,john.

Ah yes the Bog Standard BX knob

I would get rid of that steering wheel myself it is so out of character for the car. I can relieve you of it ugly burden though

Wheel and knob are correct for the car, no leather option was offered. You can replace it witha 16v type but they are quite scarce.

Looks as if I will have to learn to live withj it then. Is the 16 valve knob no longer availablke as a new part? Do any other eugeot citroen ones fit? Is it a simple friction fit push on? Thanks, john.

You can fit other ones from citroen peugeots (AX/405 etc)or aftermarket if you prefer, they just screw on. someone on here MAY have a 16v, but they arent leather.

If you are very lucky you might find a Heuliez wooden gear knob that was fitted to some special BX Breaks like 'The Buffalo'. I have seen one and it wasn't very fetching really.
Two weeks ago on Ebay here was a Momo leather steering wheel especially for the BX that sold for €42. There is also a Heuliez version featuring polished wood and metal - I saw it on the same BX that had the wooden gear knob. Again extremely rare.

I would have thought a bit of work on plugging the LHM leaks would take priority before worrying about replacing something as insignificant as the gearknob (which works perfectly well as it is...).. 8)

i have given the area of leak some investigation.there is a union which may benefit from nipping up. i have a strict policy on nipping things up.not in the dark before i go to work, not in the dark when i return from work and prefrably during the hours a motor factor or scrap yard could reasonably be expected to be open. just in case.
there is a school of thought which goes along the lines that as i have been frankly playing with the suspension in its full up and full down for my-and the kids-ammusement i may have simply over pressurised the system?
i put a drop of lhm in last night and got to work and back-50 miles-without using any lhm from the resevoir or adding to the small patch of lhm on my drive.so whatever the leak is/was it doesnt appear terminal or terrible.
when i returned to the car after work it was sat at the right height front and back which i take is a good sign?
the gear lever is a small annoyance as its not very nice to use. if i can improve my environment i generally try to.the 405 idea sounds like a plan to me. i think a go with the pressure washer and some parrifin will clean the back of the engine up at the weekend and help in my search for a leak.

All sounds like a good plan to me, as for the gearlever it does grow on you, my current TZD manual is a very late car and has what may be the 16v gearknob or even possibly a Zantia one and I actually miss the the bog standard knob (not sure if her in doors would agree)
Yes the car still being sat at ride height is always a good sign I think.
