It looks like the metal clamb of the cover actually covers up a full element of the twin elemnt bulb?

While I have no desire to micturate on anyone's march-past, I hope they've improved these things since the days when I tried to use 'em to try and make my old Mk1 1.9GT look more authentic.
They had two failings - prolonged use resulted in
(a) The things melting and
(b)The bulbs overheating and failing prematurely
During the French heatwave of 2003, I was doing a lot of night driving (it was just too hot to drive anywhere during the day) and I was getting through a headlamp bulb every couple of weeks ....... I took the yellow covers out and the problem went away.

Yellow bulbs are the best to use, but of course a) they're not cheap and b) you need to carry a spare yellow too. Or if one goes, replace both for white of course!
On fog lights I use yellow helicopter tape (if you can find it) as it doubles as a protector too.
Does anyone remember the little bottles of lacquer you used to be able to get, to paint on your headlights for the annual trip to France? (Ah those were the days lol)

I've got yellow halogen bulbs bought from the local supermarket a few years back. If anyone wants some, I don't mind finding out if they've still got them.

Funnily enough, I found a pot of that in the barn just now! Still in original packaging, with brush - sadly long-since dried up though.Philip Chidlow wrote:

Presumably you found it by accident
- surely never found it by deliberately looking for it!!

When i was nowt but a nippa(17) i thought it would be a great idea to take the bulbs out of my 2cv and paint them with the yellow headlamp paint for that authentic "French look".
Great till i turned the lights on and the headlamps filled with smoke.
Not quite the desired effect!
Richard.

Indeed - I was actually looking for a heavy duty on/off switch/isolator for the Kiln circuit in the barn. Never did find that...paulwitchard wrote:

Phil - If it comes to light again I'll tell you. I bunged it back in the dark recess from whence it came.
