first tank of diesel almost gone

Post by johnbird »

i have been a confirmed petrol head all my life.i have largely seen diesel as an agricultural vehicle or 4x4 fuel. the bx was a random purchase to fill a temporary gap in the fleet-winter in a turbocharged rear engine 800kg lowered 2 seater is not great- from a known source. it didnt start too well for me with a broken pipe and fifty quid in parts and some lost skin but its just reached 535 miles on this fill up and has just under quarter of a tank to go! i never owned a car which did 400 before! v8s sixes-straight and v turbo 4s.v4s five cylinder volvos, three cylinder smarts,a 2 cylinder 2cv and never this far on a tank.the a8 carries something like 17 gallons and cant get near.the smarts will do 50/60 mpg but have a tiny tank. her majesty has begun to show an interest in economy as her 9-5 aero is currently averaging 19 to the gallon! what is more impressive is its done 70/75 mph to and from work and run the kids around too.no hypermiling techniques for me.maybe the thin tyres help but for a twenty year old car i cant help but be impressed.

My BX diesel can only do about 400 miles on a tank - maybe I should fit the larger TD tank! (I think it's actually a small additional tank?)

I think I did once manage 500, but I don't like running a diesel much lower than quarter of a tank.

Yup, there is an extra tank fitted giving a 66 litre capacity. I always run my tank down to the bear minimum, reason being that it ensures that the tank is nice & clean & therefore if i had to run it low in an emergency then i'm not going to be getting dirty fuel issues which is the last thing you want.

Last time i filled up, there was less than 4 litres left in the tank  Never had a problem running it low as i initially when i 1st got the car would check & change the fuel filter regularly. Perhaps also using some bio diesel along with anti-fungus stuff also helped?

Welcome to the world of bx diesels there amazing ain't they  my old txd turbo did 620mls on one tank and i did Readng to ccc national in huntihngdon and back on £15 and i was shaming other cars on the M4 god i miss that bx  i remember when i bought it after some years of deviating to other makes i thought the fuel gauge was broken, i had to do 220mls before it moved off the full mark :D

i used to say bollox to those who go "you've got to do 20.000+ mls for a
diesel to be worth it" sod that all i cared about was i put £50 in i got 400-500mls out of it

p.s mine had the extra tank too.

Without wanting to upstage anyone, my last tank was 720 & my best ever was 810  Mind you, this is a 1.9 n/a rather than a turbo. I never had my tzd turbo on the road when fuel prices went daft, so i never bothered to drive economically, with my worst ever of 360 miles before needing to refill   No idea what my best was either, i just never paid attention, i do now though :x

Usually get at least 600 out of a tank in the TZD (which has the additional tank). Almost always averages about 45mpg, which makes for a simple equation - as near as dammit 10 miles per litre. So if I fill up at 600 and it takes less than 60 litres, that's good, and if it takes more, I sulk.

Yes but you feed your engine, that'll be the shredded 1/4 pounders in the airfilter boosting the chipfat throught the pump.
It grinds to a halt if you just feed yourself at the motorway services (several witnesses available)

  Never thought of that, i'll give it a go & report back   Economy when using veg oil is pretty similar to derv, the same can't be said of biodiesel

I reckon that the n/a is approx 10% better on fuel on average, which whilst not sounding like a lot, does add up over the years, so i'm always surprised that most prefer the more to go wrong turbo's which eat more fuel. I think it also depends upon the pump as to how good the turbos are on fuel.

Both the turbo engines I've had in the red car have always been more economical than the 19NA they replaced.
That said my driving has calmed down a lot over the last few years, and I'm sure if I drove like I used to then I could get considerably less than 50MPG.
On average I can do 500 miles on a tank, and mine has the little tank, at the moment.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

I can't compare like-for-like but my Pug 306 DTurbo averaged 45mpg, the BX tends to be 48. It has topped 50 on occasion, but tends to get worked hard around here (lots of hills!) so it has tailed off a bit. Last tank dropped to 38! Though quite a lot of that tank was used up by getting stuck in snow and taking a very long time to get out...
