BX Van TD Automatic for sale in Finland.

Post by rmattila »

Nice car, but ridiculous price:

Engine is a 1996 TD from ZX with slightly increased boost pressure, 4 speed automatic gearbox from GTI, GTI seats.

Last time the car was on sale last summer at 1000 eur. I offered to take it at that price, if no-one needs it more (in order to save it from being broken). Someone needed it at that time, but now it's being sold by a commercial used-car dealer.

..and a nice bumper-sticker at the rear: "Evading car taxes since 1990."

I bet the ratios are wrong though.
Mind blowing acceleration upto 80mph, and that's as fast as it will go...

The previous owner (and the maker) comments on the Finnish Citroën forum, that the engine torque could be utilized quite well, as the gearbox and kickdown cable have been adjusted to the purpose. The legal top speed on most roads is either 80 or 100 km/h around here, so max speeds are not necessarily needed. And since the performance of the turbo has been somewhat improved, the car has somewhat higher top speed than one might think. ;)

Comparing against the normal price for old BX Vans with MOT (around 200 - 400 € for petrol engines, maybe 400 - 800 for diesels, and 1000 for especially good ones), the asking price of 1900 € is out of this world - even taking in into account the rather fresh ZX TD engine. I'm pretty sure they would sell it for ~ 1000 € after some negotiation.

It might be true that it has good performance in town, but what I'm getting at, is the auto-box was designed for a petrol engine which has maximum of 6500rpm. The diesel engine, no matter what you do to the turbo, has a maximum of 4500rpm, so I would guess it will be fairly unpleasant at higher freeway speeds.

That's true: if I understood correctly the engine runs at around 3000 rpm at 100 km/h with that gearbox, whereas the most pleasant maximum torque occurs around 2500 rpm. Not much chance to go beyond 100 km/h legally here, so the ultimate top register is not so much of an issue. But I'd certainly prefer 2000 - 2500 rpm on highways.
