Coincidentally that's exactly what I paid for mine, back in early 2004. I would hope that mine hasn't gone down in value despite over doubling the mileage in that time. (Not that I'm selling!)

That's a bargain in that condition and with working AC. I would have said that it would have sold for more here but that would depend on whether it had been fitted with a catalyser before 2008 - making it Euro 2. That would determine whether you paid €800 or €300 per year in tax!

There's a BX Break on ebay.de at the moment that's gone over a grand with time still to run.

The TXD has an impressive service history, but I have some questions. Mainly about possible degradation of oils etc. Any advice?

First, the car has had Mobil 1 all it's life (bar one instance when Millars synthetic was used - oddly precipitating a rocker cover leak - since fixed of course). The car's done about 500 miles since 20 months ago when the oil and filter were changed. When would I be advised to change the oil again?

Likewise the gearbox oil: changed about 1300 miles ago - but that was in July 2006.

Coolant was changed as above.

LHM was changed and filters cleaned about 8 months ago, so that's alright.

Cambelt and tensioner, replaced just over a thousand miles ago - but again that was nearly three and a half years ago... Do I assume at least the belt'll need changing within two years?

I would change the oil and filter for what it costs now so you know its done and can plot the mileage. Regarding cambelts, its your call. I change mine every 4 years.

Wouldn't disagree - except of course the oil is about £50

But now Amy gets her 15% Halfords discount, I shouldn't complain.

Cambelts have come on a million miles (forgive the pun) since their conception now being manufactured with modern materials carbon fibres etc. If it was done a couple of years ago you should be fit for a minimum 10 years on a low mileage BX, However the biggest cause of cambelt failure has been found to be poorly or incorrectly fitted cambelts rather than material product fault so I would be more concerened about where the job was done rather than when.
Recommended Citoen intervals below unfortunately BX's not shown.

If the cambelt is a quinton hazel, change it noooooooooooow. The rubber perishes with age etc...its likely to be ok, but for the sake of getting it changed i would anyway. Tensioner only wears out due to use which it hasnt had, whilst you're getting a new cambelt fitted, get whomever to check the tensioner. Don't forget to check the waterpump as well.

£50 for oil, what the hell are you using? N/A diesels run on mineral oil which if you look around can be found around the £10 mark for 5 litres. There's no point in using semi or synthetic, they aren't designed to run on that stuff & seeing as the oil gets changed so frequently its never an issue anyway. If you were worried about using mineral oil, just up the servicing from 6k to 3k instead, that'll still work out a damn sight cheaper.

Gearbox oil, no idea, but seeing as again its quite cheap to replace why not just do it for peace of mind. However, if the gears feel nice & light, then just leave it, i wonder if what the servicing mileage actually is?

God, I think the interval on my GS is 24k - and there's 2 of them

Back in my yoof I ran a Bedford CF, and it wasn't uncommon for the belts on those to fail at around 30k if not changed.
However the biggest cause of cambelt failure has been found to be poorly or incorrectly fitted cambelts rather than material product fault so I would be more concerened about where the job was done rather than when.
Too right - at one time it was the biggest cause of engine failure on Discovery 300 tdi's

I pay about 40 quid for 25 litres, so 50 quid for 5 sounds a tad expensive! I'd change the oil anyway personally, but would say it probably doesn't need it if the low mileage is down to storage rather than lots of short trips.

The oil it's had since it was low mileage in 1994 was Mobil 1 0W/40 which all common advice seems to agree is overkill. I won't change type or brand though because although it is a bit pricey the engine seems to like it... no leaks, no smoke to speak of and so on... So: Where can I buy it cheaper?

I will do a change in advance of my next trip into France at the end of May.

The BX GTi had synthetic from new and last two services I've used semi-synthetic because everyone told me I was wasting my money using synth. Since then I've had to replace the rocker cover gasket because it sprung a leak (coincidence probably?) but now smokes a bit. It also uses oil whereas before it didn't to speak of. After 220k miles on the same engine, maybe I should've stuck to what it was used to. Possibly too late to change now, I don't know.

It's a Gates cambelt, so I think it'll be OK for now. It was fitted by a specialist company used to the car - and Citroens in general - too.

I'm not planning on using veg oil in the car, but will use Millars Cetane booster/diesel treatment, which worked wonders on our old ZX TD.

This car cost so little, considering, that I do not feel bad giving it the 'best' I can. On Kermit's advice, a dose of Activ8 will go into the gearbox with the next change of oil. But for the time being I'll leave it as the change is tickety boo..

And even the R134a a/c works a treat. So no point regassing at the moment.

Funny, but as opposed to recent ZX, Ulysse, XM, Synergie 'forays' (for which I got a reputation for contrariness), this BX has got me hooked. But ultimately - as this one ticks loads of boxes - let's hope head rules heart, eh?

0-40, in a diesel? hmm.
not quite the 15-40 it should have had then!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Sorry, that's what I was told. You can get 10W/40 Mobil 1 though, so maybe it was a mistake.

Do you think this might be a suitable oil?

http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English-LCW/c ... 10w60.aspx#

Or should I find a good 15W/40 synthetic? (If one can be found?!) Mobil actually recommend their 2000 semi-synth for the BX 1905 d.

Alternatively Total's 7000 Quartz 10W40 is also a PSA recommended oil.

I just want to make sure I give it the best, considering what it's been used to.

it's a 69BHP diesel, it'll be fine on Tesco Value oil!

But yeah, if you really want to throw expensive stuff in then I'd be using Quartz 7000, as I do in the valver, but the diesel gets quartz 5000, which is more than fine for it, and mine has that big blowy thing on the back of it!
