what is the worst job on a BX ?

Post by BX Meteor »

... on a BX of today, any job with the rust on the hex heads making spanners in a confined space a joke .....

I had to replace the brake pressure feed pipe from the front union to the rear T-piece, and I thought that was difficult, becuase I had to cut the old pipe at the rear T-piece and remove the T-piece to get the hex nipple out (I was lucky because the feeds to the calipers came undone in situ) and even on the bench with mole grips it was a b*stard to undo.

I also had a heck of a job to then bleed the brakes because the bleed nipple on the front right caliper was even worse, tried to drill it out but buggered the aluminium thread and had to get another caliper from a scrapper that had an easy nipple to undo !!

Well I thought that was a couple of days of time and sweat for a job that would have been easier when the car was 10 years younger .... there must be worse jobs in store though .... anyone got a real scare story ?

I do get those thoughts, but I'm determined to not give up if at all possible.

i think the worst job would be removeing/refitting a TURBO in situe,

but in the grand scale of things a BX is easy to work on compaired to a XANT,

I think that most jobs on a BX are bad the first time you do them, then second time round you sort of know how to overcome the head- scratching moments
Clutch was pretty hard along with fiddling with the injector system, having the pump in pieces was a definate low for me.
Re-building the hydraulic system recently was a very long and taxing task but again, next time should be better.

I'm currently waging the war against the rust with the welder which is hard but improves gradually. Once it's gone through it's test then I'll gloss over all problems!

+1 for that, although I'd add changing the heater matrix and making all the heater controls work properly...

Glad I got rid of my Xantia in 1999 and upgraded to a BX then!

Aye I've done heater matrix twice. As Todd says the first time is always the worst.

First time was on an E-reg sometime in the 90's and I hated the car while I was doing it. I already had experience of removing the steering column because the lock had broken before then, and removing a broken lock on a steering column is hell, cannot remember exactly, but the French had thought of everything except for getting a small jig-saw in somewhere.

Second matrix was on an H-reg in 2000 and it seemed quite easy then, something in the Haynes manual was not right I recall and I knew what it was back then, but I would not want to do it now 10 years on.

I reckon that some jobs on the hydraulics around the front height corrector, without having to renew a lot of pipes, might be an engine out job.

I've got to say that I've yet to find a really bad job on a BX, but then again bad is subjective & I'm comparing it to a GS!

yeah my dad had a GS and an Ami, then I got an Ami Super and I put a 1220 in that from a GS in a scrap yard. Standard Ami Super exhaust with a 1220 make a fantastic whistling noise at certain throttle openings.

Anyway I recall looking at another GS in the scrap yard which was on its side ..... GS looked like an engine out job to get at anything (by then my dad had sold his GS)

I never had to do big jobs on my TGD, but the 'simple' task of changing the glow plugs certainly caused a lot more anger than it should have done! Changing the thermostat was also a pig. I think I find jobs like this much more frustrating than a heater matrix or similar. You accept that you'll have a bit of bother with something like that, as they weren't really designed to be replaced. Having service items that are a pain to remove really is just rubbish.
