I don't think the BX is going to fit into that category for the general public, due to the perceived complexity of the suspension. But I think you're right about home maintainable cars rising more quickly - they would certainly seem more desirable to me.

but Citroens appeal to people who like something different, suspension or not.

Remember, it was the BX that propelled Citroen into the mainstream, and a lot of people probably like them for that.

Also, while it may be in our financial interests to depress prices, more cars will be scrapped as a result, as they will be 'worthless', whereas rising prices and some demand will see more cars preserved, and more parts remade for us. Good, all round, I say. Low prices only benefit you when you want to buy one - at no other time in the car's life are they a good thing.

Sorry, that comment was directed at Bob's post...you crept in between us ( :? )
any clean cars that can be maintained at home are going to see a rise on their values.
I have one BX and have no plans to buy another, so the only negative way that high prices could have for me would be if I was to buy a donor car. I agree that the general trend is beneficial in the main though.

The simplicity should also mean cheaper garage bills for those of us unprepared to sully their virgin white flesh with vile engine gak - I count myself as one of those.

Seriously though, if anyone is going to let their ownership of an old car be governed solely on the basis of a balance sheet, they aren't going to be keeping it long. I like the feeling of supporting a professional in his trade, and it's really nice when you can trust their work too.

It's only money, for Fergie's sake! I've certainly spent mine on far less worthwhile activities before, with no return either - not even memories ;)

It's cars like this that make me worry about exactly how much I'll have to put into mine:

If I could break mine, sell parts and scrap the rest, I'd have enough money to buy a car like this (assuming the price doesn't rocket up loads in the last day or so).

Although the testing of wtf is p!ssing LHM out won't happen until tomorrow morning, it's a fairly safe bet that it is going to cost more than a few quid to sort out (not to mention a 2nd replacement octopus...).

How much is an E reg 19 petrol auto with flat paint and 2 knackered doors worth? Probably a good deal less than it will cost to fix.

I paid £100 a year ago when it was drivable - with the spectre of strut replacement upon it, I don't think it's worth anything in one piece..

yeah but, if it's your hobby, you could spend it on booze or fags or at the football/rugby. Hobbies cost money and sometimes the spending of money isn't rational - it's spent with your heart not your head - my white XM had the HG go on it - car cost £600, garage bill for new HG, timing belt, water pump, etc was £1300 - car - worth £900 now probably, so I spent a grand on it that I didn't need to spend - but I know it's done, I intend to keep the car for a long time.

The "Red Shed" has just cost nearly £400 to Mot and i dont think it will ever be worth anymore than scrap as it looks so ruff, but hey its another back on the road and i love it coz its such a scruffy thing that goes so well.Dont scrap it Ray,its a rare old lady and you will get such a feeling of acheivement getting that Mot pass. Rationally i shouldnt bother spending all this time and cash on knackered old BX,s. I could just go out and buy 1 really nice car and be done with it but i get such a buzz from saving them from the crusher and like already mentioned, what price do you put on a hobby? Im not in to sport but what does a season ticket and all the travelling cost if your into footy?
Theres always a home for her up[ at the farm.

Good sentiment Richard, and very true, I think weve all spent more on our cars than their true value (I know I have plenty of times) but thats what makes us enthusiasts.

Well said everyone. I'll post in detail on the TRS thread, but she's not going anywhere.

The 'Athena' went for 200 quid - despite the fact that I am obviously wearing BX tinted spectacles (!) - still think it was worth a few bob more than that - he should have stuck a years ticket on it.
