Help please with some spares - new member

Post by DavidDS »

Hi - just found this website and am already impressed with the know how and resources some people have and how willing they are to share.

I have acquired a very tidy (if sun faded) 1 owner BX GTI 8v (1991) from an elderly lady giving up driving and who has had it from new. Light metallic blue, with a few months tax and MOT on it so I could drive it home, spheres like granite, genuine and documented 39,000miles for the princely sum of £100, having had a weak moment but needing to return to the Citroen fold after a long break - previous cars include a 2CV, GSX3, CX pallas and XM

Just got a fresh MOT with no advisories from a local independent garage that was really impressed with how straight the car is - one small bit of rust in the corner of the boot floor over the exhaust. New spheres and a decent service and cam belt and it is trasnformed and driving very nice and I am left wondering why it has been so long that I abandonned quirky Citroens.

Now, some minor cosmetic tidying. Aside from hoping to make contact with some like minded fans, I am after some help. Ebay has failed to date to render any bits and pieces that will make a fine BX one that looks really good. I am after and hoping someone out there is like me (with my other cars) and will have lofts, sheds and garages full of spares that could go to helping another BX look good.

I have approached several so called BX specialists and been taken aback by the lack of response / interest in coming back to me despite advertising otherwise. Compared with my other weakness (Saabs and Rovers) both amply supported by specialists falling over themselves to keep older cars going, maybe I have randomly approached the wrong BX people.

Items I am looking for at present are:

1. Electric door mirrors - complete in good working condition - both sides
2. Rear bumper and black bumper trim inset
3. Tow bar
4. Some genuine BX alloys - as long as not kerbed / porous / buckled, condition is not such an issue so long as they can be refurbed. Currently I have the black steel wheels and some nasty cheap and broken aftermarket plastic trims that look vile.
5. O/S headlamp

Obviously happy to pay a fair price and cover postal costs if anyone has anything suitable please?

Oh and does anyone more teccy than me have any useful advice on tasteful (non bling) upgrading to the car's stereo that is out of sight to toe rags to replace / upgrade the currently very tinny, sad 80's Clarion?

Oh and finally, the remote control for the central locking has been lost and I am not sure if it is worth bothering trying to get some new ones and recommissioning this?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Hi there, welcome to the Club. It's a good place to be if you are afflicted with BXism.

Sounds like you got a peach there. With values rising, I would suggest you can spend a little on it to get it right and not feel like you're wasting money.

I am currently bidding on a new Valeo headlight on eBay because it's new and matches the condition of my n/s one. You are welcome to have my 'old' one (there's nothing wrong with it!) for the expense of P&P if I win the new one.

Likewise rear bumper. I have a secondhand one on the GTi at the moment as a temporary measure until I can fit my brand new one. Give me a couple of months and that'll be available too (at cost to me, which was £25). I might have used spare inserts too, but can't promise.

Hi David

Welcome to the club, regarding the rear bumper inserts, if they are peeling they can be sanded down and spray painted black.

Alos regarding the boot floor area, this is a common spot on most examples, and if not already "through" I would get the rust treated asap.

Any pictures of this beauty by the way?

There's a rear bumper, a smattering of driver's side lights and at least a manual mirror - electric ones do come up, as do alloys* - on eBay at the moment.

*I had to buy nine Speedlines before I found four that balanced perfectly, so be patient. Alternatively, spend the money on good tyres and try and locate, through this club - a set of OE trims.

Thanks to all the friendly and helpful messages to date and I just picked up a useful thread of ramblings on ICE. Thanks too for the offers of advice and potential parts. I will get some photos of the car as is onto the forum shortly - bit faded as it was never garaged and sad looking but its only minor cosmetic and subject to weather holding a professional mop and cut, respray of the roof and front bumper and it will half decent. Rear bumper has a crease - not intending to sound sexist but old lady, car - car parks = bashed door mirrors and rear bumper!

I should have a right hand electric mirror. UK cars only had electric left hand mirrors I think, as it's not exactly difficult to do the driver's side one manually!. But I picked up one from a LHD BX a while back because it was there (you know how it is) and have never used it.
I've got a towbar available as well. The only trouble is I'm in France and although I'm back to UK quite frequently, I'm usually on a motorbike so carryng something as bulky as a towbar's a bit tricky. If you're prepared to wait, though, I can bring it back next time I'm in the car, with possible drop-offs including Leics, Norfolk, Hants, Dorset.

The GTi has electric mirrors both sides - with the driver's side heated too. I have a new LHD heated electric mirror (from France) but wouldn't want to sell it unless the price was right TBH.

Electric mirrors aren't that hard to come by if you have a little patience, and keep looking on ebay.

I only paid something silly like £11 brand new, for the last one I bought...

Welcome to BXClub David - sounds as though you've found a good one there.

To echo Tim's suggestion - good idea to treat the boot floor particularly where the exhaust hanger is welded to the side - might even stop that falling off :-)

How bad is your OS headlamp ? I should have a used spare available soon (but keep an eye on ebay for NOS ones).

Where in Hampshire are you ? I'm probably going to the South Coast in the next few days and I've got a couple of spare headlamps in the workshop but not sure which side.
