How much is a Diesel Hurricane worth?

Post by rayfenwick »

Hi all. There's a chance for me to buy a J reg diesel Hurricane. I want to know:

How much is it worth if completely sorted, no issues?

How much is it worth with a shattered rear bumper (metalwork behind looks ok from the half-hour I had with the car yesterday), a big ding in the front N/S door(might push out), a couple of long scratches on the N/S rear wing.

Everything works as it should, no rust in sunroof, interior is immaculate (I looked for something, found nothing)

The car is in VERY good clean condition other than the damage I've mentioned.

I know what the seller wants, and I know what I want to pay, so I'd be interested in hearing from you guys.

Many thanks as always :)

(just edited the title as I forgot to state it was a diesel.... )

whats the mileage, previous owners and MOT?

Low mileage 1 owner car in perfect condition long test and FSH £1000 - £1200
High mileage multiple owners perfect condition long test incomplete SH £600 - £800
I would be knocking £300-400 off for the damage you describe

The damage you point out will cut the value of the car down considerably. After all what's the point in driving around in a BX that relies on its looks for much of it's special appeal? Good news on the interior and the rest of the car though; it suggests to me it may well be worth spending some dosh to get it right. Door, scratches and bumper: Find a local friendly bodyshop and if you supply the parts you might be able to get it fixed up for £400. Less if you can find a good Hurricane door. IF you can find one, a rear bumper will cost at least £50 unless someone on here has one and feels charitable.

You don't mention if it's a TZD or a GTi. A diesel will be worth slightly more. Values for a sorted one of either? £550-850.

With the damage? £200?

*EDIT* Just read the post by Mr. Defender. I agree - a one owner immaculate on will be worth more obviously and T & T will affect price. But at the moment, I stick to my £200 (OK, maybe £250).

Thanks guys.

It's the turbo diesel. I'll check on mileage and number of previous keepers and get back to you.

It's round the corner, quite literally, which is odd, as I've never seen it about anywhere. It was arse-ended as he was driving into a supermarket bay - he slowed down to turn, and the driver behind didn't... only a 10mph or so crash, but enough to shatter the bumper...

It's with a friend of the owner, and apparently the owner wants £600, stating it is a grand's worth of car. It's clearly worth more than scrap, but not the money he's talking so far... I'll find out more and let you know.

Not again! I'm getting horrible flashbacks - it's not rust that does for Hurricanes, but a swift kick in the pants from some idiot who's not looking where they're going!

In that condition 400 quid tops - and I think that's being a bit charitable?

i find as a general rule if the interior is very good generally the rest of the car is cared for. its almost a psycological assesment. someone who takes care of their interior will take care of the car. people prepared to load the interior with rubbish, building materials, paint pots etc etc generally in my experience dont care so much about the overall maintenance. i love to view an old car and see seat covers fitted with lovely new looking seats beneath............

I was going to reply a lot less than it would be to fill the fuel tank but then I thought better of saying that :P

I contacted the owner for details yesterday - he was out and about, but said he'll email me. I'll let you know what's said.

Is it a cat c write off? If so then its worth peanuts, scrap value is all i'd offer regardless of the rest of the cars conditon. If the owner thinks its worth so much money, why don't they get it fixed

It hasn't been mentioned, but I'll bring it up (when I hear from the owner - nothing yet).

A very good question, and one I shall be asking him.

Talking about rolling turds in glitter, my old mum used to have a friend who got a bit of dementia and started secreting her turds all over the house, but she'd tie a red bow around each one first. Some she wrapped and gave away as presents ;-)

I went to see the owner's mate last week, as I'd not heard anything. The mate rang the owner, who doesn't want to sell apparently, he wants time to think....

According to the aforementioned mate, it's the owner's pride and joy, but he's too skint to afford to buy a rear bumper (he's been told £200 apparently - probably from the same place that told him he had "a grand's worth of car"...)

So, it looks like it'll be staying where it is. He has my number, but I'm not going to play silly games with him. Yes, with the damage fixed it'd be a nice car, being the 19TD it'd be quite quick but also cheap to run (compared to my other big cars..), but I'm not going to pay silly money for it - even if it has got headlight covers and a sunroof deflector :)

I can see it ending up scrapped in the end - a pity.
