Stainless steel exhausts

Post by electrokid »

Does anyone know how this can be achieved ? If anyone knows of a manufacturer or someone who can cobble a st st exhaust system from stock parts etc.

The TGD should have failed its MOT yesterday but I'm well known at the garage and the tester was kind and put the leaky exhaust as an advisory instead (the first advisory for 4 years so can't complain).

While the TGD needs a new exhaust asap I might as well look for a system for the 4x4 project at the same time. Chatting with a guy yesterday who has some experience of st st exhausts - he reckoned that the downpipe in st st can split so advised a standard downpipe with the rest st st.

So - what I'm trying to source is...

Normal downpipe in steel plus complete exhaust systems in stainless,

For...

TGD diesel estate 1992 (n/a 1900)
and
4x4 petrol estate 1992 (n/a 1900)

Thanks.

Try MIj performance in Walsall. I had a stainless system fitted to my 16v last month. This was from the stock downpipe back. £294 fully inc. Regards Mark.

Thanks Mark,

They look very well set up to do the job and well worth the trek from Woking.

I need to get 2 new downpipes because both have rusted through - if I remember, the 4x4 (still stored locally) has quite a fat downpipe compared to the diesel. Looking at the Citroen TIS there are a lot of common part numbers in the various exhaust systems which is helpful but it doesn't identify a pipe that is fatter than the rest - any part number suggestions for the 4x4 downpipe welcome.

My list says:

Petrol 1905L + 4x4 carb + injection ........ 96 076 276
Diesel 1905L + 4x4........96 072 222

There's also on the petrol:

Petrol 1905L + 4x4 carb (XT) injection (XT)....... 96 061 798, whatever that means :( Gibbo.

Another stainless exhaust supplier you can try is Longlife - I believe they may have a nationwide network, but my local one is Thornbury, north of Bristol. They specialise in bespoke systems made to fit the vehicle in their workshop, and will do complete or just part systems. I'll be getting them to do a new back box for the GS soon as I'm struggling to find one with the correct tailpipe and by back box is now more patch than original metal.

I'm seeing the same range of part numbers - so at least that's consistent - thanks. I've had an idea - I'll go back to one of the companies who've given me a quote for the full system and ask them if they can find pipe diameter and length specs for their downpipes - shouldn't be too difficult for them - hopefully I'll be able to suss which ones I need from there.

BTW I got a quote for the complete system from Kwik Fit at around £250 - the quote from HiQ was just £190 - quite a difference.
as I'm struggling to find one with the correct tailpipe
I think if there's any problems getting exhaust components then it should be almost as easy to find st st equivalents and not a great deal more cash either - let's hope I'm right for both our sakes :-) Thanks for the heads-up re Longlife Mike - I'll check them out.

That's why I'm going that route. I've looked at the Longlife site & can get a stainless box made to measure with the tailpipe shape & silencing level of my choice for around £150. The cheapest GS box (as opposed to GSA - lower tailpipe & different exit angle) I found in mild steel worked out at just under £200 with shipping from Germany.

That makes sense Mike - when it comes to needing a custom exhaust I'm sure there are more people making them in stainless than in mild - so st st should actually work out cheaper !

Just checked Longlife's website - they have 'dealers' countrywide - I'd guess a 'dealer' would be anyone from a garage to an exhaust specialist who's taken a franchise from Longlife - good idea.

Found a relatively local one (15 miles) so I'll toddle along there and have a chat.

Thanks Nat. Longlife do seem to be the way to go.

I called in to the local franchisee at Hayes in Middlesex today - they are going to fit a complete system for £395 inc - bit on the expensive side but there's some extra pipe because they are going almost up to the manifold.

The existing pipe has rusted through at the 'leading edge' where it comes down from the manifold so they're going to sleave to the descending part of the pipe. They've not had any problems with pipe splitting in that area and the quality of their welding looks very good.

So that's the TGD about to be sorted - thanks for the info guys - much appreciated.

Now I know how they work I can measure up the system on the 4x4 and get that under way sometime.

That seems a bit pricey Brian, is it possibly because you are down south mate? Might be an idea to phone up some northern one's if you are coming upto wetherby & drop it off while you're up if they work out a cheaper price :D I would have thought £250-300 is what it should cost for a full exhaust system?

I'm watching this thread with interest as new exhaust time surely approaches. Out of interest, how often do ss exhausts need cleaning out (or do they ever)?

Thanks

A bit pricy indeed - West London prices I'd guess. I expect there are better prices out there but this is reasonably local so easier to get to if anything goes wrong. The guy spent a long time explaining the ins and outs of the job not just the 'oh yeah that'll be 400 notes mate' so I'm confident they know what they're doing - which seems increasingly to be a questionmark these days.

Another minor point - it's on an industrial estate and opposite there's an MOT test centre so in theory I could book the 4x4 in for an MOT and drive it legally to and from the site even if it was just to get the exhaust system done.

I'm going to do it once every twenty years whether it needs it or not  I don't think it ever needs doing TBH

I was in two minds about bothering with st st - the system on the car wasn't new when I bought the car and I've done 50K so they seem to last pretty well anyway.

Hmm :D couched in those terms I think I'll replace it with standard then - so long as the parts are available. Otherwise inox it'll have to be.

Thanks Brian, at least I'll save a couple of hundred quid in the shorter term.
