Dashboard Split

Post by mds141 »

Noticed a small split in the dashboard last night. Just to the right of the digital clock by the outlet for the windscreen blower. looks like a weak point from when the dash was moulded. Is this a regular occurence. Seems strange it's taken 22 yrs for it to happen.
p.s. got in the car this morning and no sign of the split! Seems to occur as the plastic expands and contracts. :?

my instrument binacle to use what i think is the correct term i can see has snapped one of it's mounting clips underneath on right hand side and wobbles around a fair bit. And steering shroud is loose, been meaning to get wround to fixing -

what is the best glue? Araldite? I tries that on glove box hinges once and it lasted about 5 seconds, although a trickier area.

Dashboard cracking where you described is a common feature it seems on all BXs over here in NZ. Something to do with the strong UV rays apparently. The Aussies apparently suffer worse because of the heat.

Sitting in a cool location my garage is a Dashboard from a low mileage 77,000km Bx with no cracks or blemishes. I said one day I would replace the cracked one with this dashboard...... That was 3 years ago

I used araldite on my glove box hinges and it its still working after 5 years. Must just be luck i guess.

The key to Araldite is the mixing. Get the quantities too far either way and it won't work (from my experience...)

And thinners - cellulose thinners. Wipe it generously over the items to be Araldited (is that really a verb??? :? ) and you're left with a chemically clean pair of surfaces to which the Araldite will duly stick like a starving lamprey.

Of course, you should first ensure the thinners doesn't dissolve whatever it is you're trying to repair before you go sloshing the stuff about. Don't ask me how I came by this knowledge - it's far too embarrassing. #-o

For stuff that might melt with the thinners, try some IPA. (no not the beer...)

So, the BXclub top tip is to glue the glovebox lid with beer-induced vomit. You heard it here first... ;)
