Smallest size engine

Post by tzd-92 »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what is the smallest size engine that Citroen put in the BX as I am considering having one and because of my age I need the engine to be as small as possible so that my insurance is as cheap as possible.

Thanks

Rob

Twas the 1100cc XY "suitcase" engine but you'll not find one in the uk.

You could source the engine from a number of other cars and a whole host of other PSA engines but you're insurance will still hammer you for the conversion. Not worth your trouble IMHO.

I'd have thought your best bet would be a BX14, surely the insurance isn't that bad if you shop around properly, including ALL the comparison sites.

Ask one of the lads on here for a BX14 Reg number and go get LOTS of quotes (spend a good couple of hours doing it, it pays dividends).
I have zero patience for your tedium.

The little 1.4TU engine BX is the best to go for, 1988 onwards, although most of the earlier 1.4 suitcase engined cars have long since met their maker. I had one and although it was charing it wasnt fun to drive and sounded very agricultiral.

You may find a 1.7 or 1.9D (non turbo) not to be much more as the performance etc is the same and may prove much easier to get hold of.

I always found the diesels to be way more expensive to insure... A 1.9d for me was the same (roughly) as a 1.9 TZI Petrol. I did lots of online quotes when I was bored in school  Insurance companies seem to think that you'll pay more to insure a diesel because it costs less to run... I can't see any other reason for it.

Stick with a 1360cc TU engined BX. Cracking engine... You won't find a cheaper all-round BX to run.

Although that's just my experience... Others might differ

I agree, even at bargain basement level, my 19TXD is more expensive to insure than a 14-16 petrol. The GTi was only a few quid more.

To be factually correct, the smallest engine fitted to the BX was 954cc. But seen as only 400 were made and probably none still exist you'll never find one.

As far as UK models go then yeah, it's the 1360.

Make sure its a pre 1990 model & you should be able to get classic car insurance on it unless you are younger than their particular driver age restriction.

Thanks for all the help guys I will be keeping a look out for a 1.4! The only reason why I want a 1.4 is purely on the grounds of insurance as at 17 they will just want more and more the bigger the engine.

At the moment I've got a mk2 Golf 1.3 but I would love a BX if I'm honest as I have always liked them. If I get a BX my intention is to run that for a couple of years and do a full resto on the Golf. Also I think after a couple of years I wouldn't mind a TZD.

Again thanks for the help :D

Down here on the shakey rugby islands the smallest BX is a the BX16 unless of course some one imported a 14 from the UK...rare as hens teeth though.

The most common sized BX is the BX19, some reason if the car is not close to or larger than a 2ltr over here it is not a car, although I think that attitude is changing with the fuel price hikes.

Thinking about it a BX14 life expectancy on the hills around here would probably kill it real quick anyways.

Source???

The 1100 was only available in Italy, Greece & Portugal but i've never heard reference to a smaller production engine in them.

New one on me!

Seems a lot of expense to go to only to produce 200, the steel fabrication of the bootlid alone would have been prohibitive. let alone everything else and there's no other reference on the web.

Looks more like a reference to the Anadol FW11 or something else but you never know!

Can't imagine the 950 in a BX would ever be economical, more like asthmatic!

The 954cc BX was an urban myth, and as far as I know not true, the 1124cc Dommage was available on the continent, with one piece rear windows which didnt wind down etc.

I dont imagine it was a ball of fire!

'Dommage' translates as French for 'pity'- which is appropriate for such a poverty spec car.

Unless it is a wind-up.

Seems strange if the car was meant to be rock bottom price, that they would stick stripes and logos on it, and add a picknic basket.
A proper fuel gauge would be much more useful.

The new C1 is available in pretty basic form, but it does have air con!
I suspect a 'Dommage' varsion of the C1 would actually sell quite well.
Give it a fuel gauge and carpets though, please.

I reckon Matts link originated 1st April not the previous publication in July 1999 as they say.

 60+ mpg (50% better than a Moggy Minor of same size)?

 Tow bar as standard?

 Monogrammed picnic basket & utensils as standard supply?

 And the best joke - a faglighter that's a wine corkscrew instead!
