That particular hacksaw model has a 9,6 mm stroke, which is pretty optimal for cutting automobile panels:
Useful info - thanks - I'll check out my local air tool shop who usually have decent kit.

The refractory I couldn't remember earlier is magnesium oxide - but magnesium silicate would also do the job.

Machinemart tools are ample enough for the DIY mechanic

I use one of these mini grinders which are ideal and at £20 a must have for anyone with a compressor. (great for exhaust removal)

This turned out to be a reasonable cash deal...
The shop had a small angle grinder for £20 and a 115mm version for not much more. I already have a cheap 240v 115mm grinder - cost me £15 from CPC ages ago and seems to keep going. I also have a 230mm Hitachi  which was left behind by some workmen who were putting in new gas mains... 'rescued' by a neighbour who then realised he didn't have a use for it so he gave it to the local keeper-of-the-right-tool-for-the-job which is why I have it :-) Turned out to be 110v which is not a problem since I already have a big yellow transformer thingy which normally runs electronics kit.

It recently ground (    ) smoking to a halt - stripped and found a bearing seized and a tooth missing on the drive motor pinion - freed the bearing and cleaned out / re-greased and it lives again !

So have I  althought the 115 was free with 50 grinding discs I bought for work and the 230 Hitachi is currently loaded with a diamond tip blade that is slicing through bricks and 2" thick concrete flags like butter whilst currently finishing off my garage extension I was allowed to treat myself to for buying the wife the TZD instead of a new C1.
 strange how the female ming works

Well, she passed without any remarks. :D I'll still change the windscreen, though, and probably the port side balljoint too: I think I sensed a slight play there, even though the inspector did not comment anything on that.

I'll stick to the unambiguous naval terminology, since "right" and "left" are easily confused by looking the car from front or rear, and the steering wheel can be on any side etc.
