2017 can't wait

Post by tzd »

Hi all,
I can't wait until 2017 ? ? ? This is when my BX will be 25 years old and eligible for free road tax. Just read the date code on the door jam and mine was born 3 June 1992.

Kev
It isn't just a car it is a BX and it's my BX. Long live the BX.

Sorry to p!ss on your parade, but that was frozen in 1997 - To quote Wikipedia:

Vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 are eligible for a free vehicle licence under "historic vehicle" legislation. This is due to the age of the vehicle and a presumption of limited mileage. Initially this was a rolling exemption applied to any vehicles over 25 years old, however the cutoff date was frozen in 1997. The change to "pre-1973" was unpopular in the classic motoring press, and a number of classic car clubs are campaigning for a change back to the previous system.

As the owner of a 1979 car, it's particularly annoying... :(

Let's hope they change it back to the old system, but I can't see it somehow... :(

One of dear Gordon Brown's first actions when he became chancellor, a stealth tax, a warning of things to come. If only he'd stopped there. :( Gibbo.

Terrifies me that people still think the 25 year rule is in place. See LOADS of cars on Ebay claiming this.

The cut off is technically 7/1/73, as any cars from the first few days of 1973 are considered built in 1972. It is the build date, not the registered date - some cars as late as 1974-plate can be free tax.

There was a car on Ebay recently that claimed to be MOT exempt due to age!

They just changed it here on the IoM. I was looking forward to cheap motoring but they stopped the 25 year cut off this year and anything registered from Jan 87 is liable for full road tax :(

..that_ (to dollywobblers post) from memory it was frozen virtually the year after they brought the legislation in so how so many people still think the rolling rule still applies is beyond me.

There are periodic rumours of bringing us in line with most of the rest of Europe and introducing a 30 year rolling exemption or discount. The problem I see with this is that many of these countries also restrict the use of these vehicles, ranging from local use only (such as in Ireland & France) to weekend use only. Unless they make it optional (again like Ireland) this would seriously cramp my style, as whatever I have on the road at the time gets regular use and the BX & motorbike are my only vehicles under 30 years old!
