vinyl roof?

Post by 4-eyed-space-cadet »

My silver K-plate 1.9 TZD is peeling badly on the roof (and other places but the roof is the worst by a long way) The long term answer is a respray in a non faux-metallic colour but until I can afford that, I thought of covering the scabby roof with old-fashioned vinyl.
Its got a sunroof that a previous owner "sorted" with lots of bathroom silicon and gaffa tape. I got most of the silicon out and cleared the drain tubes and it doesn't leak anymore but the gaffa tape removal did nothing for the roof. The wind deflector was cracked and bodged up with grotty fibreglass so that got binned. Anybody done this before or will it just look daft? I had thought of bringing the vinyl down to the waistline at the rear 3/4s but I'm not convinced about taking it that far.

Interesting thought. Not entirely out of keeping with cars of the eighties/early nineties (although going out of favour)... and certainly it won't look bad if done right.

I'd suggest bringing it down to the level equivalent to the side windows present on some BX model's C pillars. Also down as far as the bottom of the windscreen on the A pillars. On the C pillars you might want to finish the edge of the vinyl off with something like a narrow chrome strip? (Nice if you do the bumper trim chrome too?)....

Anyway, let us know how you get on.

Truth be told, I think that\'d look truly awful!

If money is an issue, a rattle can repsray would look better as a short-term fix.

I once took an Austin A60 part exchange that had a pretend vinyl roof :) the prat had sprayed it with underseal.

As for a quick cheap paint job on the roof one of my young customers used 'Tekaloid' coach paint and put it on with a paint roller, he got a very acceptable finish. Gibbo.

I guess that's the look I was imagining. Vinyl or not, a dark roof would be smart.

I think a vinyl roof could look really good if it was done well - chrome trim and all that as Phil suggested - particularly on an 'Athena' or high spec car. Done badly it would be a bit of a horror show!

Some CX prestiges had vinyl roofs didn't they - or did I dream it!?

I would have thought having the roof proffesionally resprayed would be cheaper than a vinyl roof? a body shop will be able to get rid of the gaffer tape reside / scratches.

In this case a respray might be the practical way to go - but with unlimited funds in a good custom shop I think the vinyl roof option might be quite 'clarsy'?

Nice BX 'what if' pipe dream though - maybe?

I didn't dream the vinyl roof prestige - found this in an old brochure ^

My CX Prestige will be getting the vinyl roof replaced, though mine will be silver, not gold. (It's currently baby blue )

Someone on the Yahoo XM-L group resprayed his XM with a black roof.. looks very tasty, though I can't find a good picture, this is the best I can do..

Very tasty! I think dark rooves look good on very angular designs - a bit 'cabrio-ish' without actually being a 'cabrio'. I'm not entirely convinced by the BX - it looks like it's got ideas above its station a bit!?
