Phase 1 GTi 8v

Havent seen one on a dealers forecourt like that for years, a good machine polish and some proper trims (artic steel and RXBX have some) and it would look good. Phase 1 Gti's are getting rare now, bit optimistic though at that kinda money but lets hope!

Looks like an honest example. They keep coming out of the woodwork.

That pic reminds me of the guy i bought my current one from. And it has had it's fair share of issues. Lets hope this one's an ironic namesake. I'd be very keen especially if it could be haggled down to 5 to 700. I really fancy a Gti now after having lived with a 1.6 petrol for a while. Mmm.. just a little bit more oomph, yes please
What i'd really like to do is put a Gti engine in my current one.

I went over to look at this when it was first advertised back in August. I would say that it needs a fair bit of work to get the body looking right - the vendor mentions paint fade/lacquer peel but IMO would need a thorough going over the whole thing. My general impression was that it was a bit shabby and about £400 above what it was worth.
That said, not seen any more GTIs advertised at dealers recently and maybe they'd take an offer.

For £900 I\'d expect a near-mint GTi. That\'s 16v money, and the only thing the GTi has over the 16v is a slightly better ride and taller gearing for motorways etc. But if you wanted a good ride and tall gearing you\'d buy a TD. And if you wanted a quickish car, you\'d buy a 16v. Don\'t get the GTi market much, myself

I prefer the Gti over the 16V - less complex or tempermental for the home mechanic and much quicker than the TD - especially on an A road. The Gti is a Grand Tourer rather than a sports carKitch wrote:For £900 I'd expect a near-mint GTi.
