Estate load cover

Here goes silly question No 1:

How on earth does the load cover in the BX estate fit and work?

I know it's a silly question but try as I might I can't seem to do anything sensible with it. I know I have it the right way round (the small hinged section to the back) as the blinds hook up ok. I haven't got it linked to the tailgate as the strings are broken. Lifting it up at the back by hand, it hits the sides before it raises more than about a foot. What's the secret? And how do the strings fit?

So much I don't know and I start with this!

You have just discovered the shortcomings of the estate's rear cover. It's not as bad as it first seems though, I got used to it years ago

The string fitting is obvious over the knobs on the tailgate.
On the shelf (cover) the strings fit on the SMALL rear part such that this lifts up first when you open the tailgate. The length of the strings are "calibrated" to make the angled rear shelf clear the tailgate when lifting.

Meaning first part of lifting tailgate does not lift the shelf

Sounds all that complicated but really is logic when you look at it

Thanks Jaba - I was afraid someone would say just what you did!
Anders, I understand what you said and was thinking it was the only logical solution.

As much as I like the idea of a solid load cover for the dogs to jump about on (and they'll LOVE it) it looks as if it really hinders access to the boot! If the old girl passes her MoT and becomes a viable commuter classic, I'm going to have to find a replacement arrangement; I bet the Xantia pull out shelf won't fit.
