Not as much as HE was Kev - but a combination of factors meant that the logistics of keeping a mechanically sophisticated car in tip-top condition was going to be impossible in the longer term.

That and the storage for parts, my remote location and that bloody Smart car of the wife's!

In the event, they've both gone to blokes who've got the nous and willingness to look after them. That was my main concern - and I'm happy they're in good hands. =D>

I'd have to say that the recession had a big part to play in my decision to sell. After buying a motorbike in an effort to cut down on commuting costs, then finding that I enjoyed it, I just wasn't using the BX enough to justify keeping it. If I could have worked out a way of doing so, I'd have kept it, as it's the most modern car I could see myself owning at the moment!

I'd have to agree with the comments that most BX's are in the hands of enthusiasts now - mine came from one and has gone to another. Most owners that were running them simply as cheap transport have moved onto newer vehicles now, if only because rust is less of a factor with them. Comparatively few people are willing to buy and learn to use the necessary tools for long term rust repairs, and paying someone else to do it can get expensive very quickly!

Ha! I went the other way! Had a Xantia in the late nineties, and it was the least reliable car I've ever had - in fact in nearly thirty years of driving cheap or free cars it's the only one I've ever paid proper money for (it was only four years old), the only one I've ever lost money on when it came time to sell it, and the only one to break down properly and leave me stranded and unable to bodge it home (snapped cambelt leading to snapped camshaft on a slip road of the Peripherique in Paris).
Fixed it, flogged it and upgraded to a free BX TRS19 estate and have been running BXs ever since.

Well, I'm not too scared - he's been threatening to come over to the mainland for a while now but obviously hasn't dared venture into the hills yet. So I think I'm fairly safe! :P

Can\'t see the recession affecting BX ownership at all TBH. They\'re not worth anything relatively and no one is going to sell their new car and buy a BX to save money; they\'d buy a Mondeo diesel instead.

Unless you lose your job, don\'t get another one sorted and can\'t afford to run any car (in which case you just take it off the road and stop running it as selling it won\'t exactly release much in the way of cash) , I can\'t see how it would affect BX ownership.

Here's a way:

You lose your job, or just find things getting tighter with the cost of food & utilities going up quicker than your pay. Your household has more than one car, 1 being the BX while the other is something more modern that partner or whoever is more willing to use, and that costs much less to run both in terms of fuel & tax. You find you can no longer afford the costs of 2 cars, but either have nowhere off road to park, or even worse from a financial point of view you're renting somewhere to put the BX. When the choice comes down to the car or basics like food & power, it becomes an easy one, and off the car goes.

I've been lucky not to be in the above position, but have been damn close (I'd be not far off now if I hadn't managed to cut my transport bills then get a small pay rise at work). I have however rescued a couple of cars over the years which the owners couldn't afford to keep. In each case they would have been scrapped due to the tax running out simply because they couldn't afford to renew it. One was out on the street, while the other was in a garage that the owner had spent the tax money on in rent. The value of the car in these circumstances is immaterial, the aim being to stop the drain on the resources.

Well like I said, if shit has suddenly got so tight that you can\'t afford to run the car, you can\'t afford to run any car so stop running a car. The only issue you might have is somewhere to put it, so that could have a bearing and depends on your dwelling I suppose.

If it\'s a second car, sell the main car (which if newer is worth more and will be suffering depreciation that the BX will no longer be) and use the money from that. Reason with your partner to use the BX as a main car - they\'re cheap to run, reliable, comfy, won\'t turn any heads, practical, easy to drive and enjoyable. Just don\'t run a 16v every day - 22mpg around town :(

When shit sorts itself out, go back to your normal lifestyle.

I have to admit the recession hasn't really effected me too much, although work isn't as busy as it has been, we still have enough to keep us on our toes.

Thing is though, the most expensive car I've ever bought was an Escort Gti when I still worked for ford, I sold it when I started at the garage I'm at now as without the cheap ford parts, it just didn't make sense.

After my 2nd Xantia Hdi, I came to the conclusion that it isn't price that designates quality, it's how well the car has been looked after in the past;
at the moment I've currently got a Xantia td with nearly 200k on the clock and it has been much more reliable than the hdi because it was looked after by a decent garage (us!).

I will never again buy a car from a used car dealer, and certainly no new cars, bangernomics, if played correctly is the much better option!
