Picking up my first BX tonight (+ introduction)
Hello all,
Am picking up my first BX tonight - 17TZD Turbo Diesel Estate in red (you might have seen it finish on e-bay last night). Slightly nervous at the moment as the reputation for problems is slightly daunting, though coming from a history of Fiats and BL cars I am hoping it won't be too much of a shock.
Will probably be on this forum a fair bit trying to work things out and get all the little bits sorted so hope to also be able to contribute a little if there are things I can help with.
FYI: I am a diesel development engineer at Ricardo in Shoreham. Also drive a 1964 VW camper. Never owned a diesel car before, despite working on diesel development for 11 years!
Anyway, hello everyone, will be seeing you around!

Howdy James. With Fiat and BL experience, you'll be fine! Iffy electrics are something you're already used to...
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the PSA diesel can trace its roots back to the Ricardo-tweaked Citroen diesels of the 1930s. Swirl technology wasn't it? I've got Ricardo's biog somewhere. Maybe I should have another read up...

My advice to you would be same advice I've always given.
When you get the car, take the wheels off go go through the car with a fine tooth comb, replace anything that looks likely to cause problems in the future. Main thing to replace would be the timing belt, but check out your pipework for rusting and your hoses for chaffing.
Service the brakes, especially the rears, even if they look OK! Oil up all your pipework underneath and treat any rust spots.
Simply, preventative maintenance!
Do this and the chances are you'll enjoy many miles of trouble free motoring.
Buying a cheap car from ebay or anywhere else thinking your buying a totally reliable car is sheer folly. It's up to you to make it reliable.
Don't be scared of what looks like a complex vehicle, they're not, once you get to know them.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Just back from picking up "Audrey" (as named by PO due to reg no K49AUD). So far very impressed! Surprised at how alive everything feels - steering and brakes feel direct and sharp (though slightly lacking in feedback), and ride is amazing yet roll seems controlled. Very clever.
Unfortunately thee are a couple of faults. Interior lighting seems challenged (switch on drivers door faulty and drivers side light not working). Front windows also playing up so going to have to whip the door panels off.
With regards to Ricardo, I guess this engine has a comet combustion chamber which was one of our things back in the day. As an aside, I look after the Ricardo historic fleet which includes an example of the A10 Rosalie Diesel so I get the pleasure of driving that around on occasion! Thd BX is definitely a massive step on from that, as it should be with 50 years development!
Cheers

Hi James
Your estate looks a bit "bare"
It would look lovely with a set of these!
