What I am deffinately missing the point on is; where has this silly figure of £1500 has come from? It is just an old BX, with a N/A diesel and TZD spec of that year so if it feches more than £750 i will be suprised. The only thing that might IMHO push it past this is the colour. For some reason the colour black appears to make some potential car buyers blinkered to the rest of the car (not BX specific)BX Meteor wrote:So if the advertised BX is not worth £1500, then why is any BX worth £1500. If it does reach £1500 then I will put my BX up for sale too, it does not have FSH, but I have done a lot of work on it myself.
Now to go back to a much earlier posting by me in this thread, does anyone want to participate in a sweepstake on the final price ?

Out of order! More than one person disagreeing with your argument in a polite friendly manner does not equate to mob rule! OK, I appologise for that one, but not anything previously, it is like banging my head aginst a brick wall to explain a very simple point I made ages ago in this thread, and as I say it has gone on and on since then with the same points coming from different people, a good 50% of the points being ones that I already made, such as renewing the Octopus is a good idea, if not then since it is 18 years old, one has a potential extra hidden risk of failure that is only in the BX.Defender110 wrote:Out of order! Sorry to be patronising, but please read each word of the sentence (I think I have finally managed to get it succinctly in one sentence)

Late to this thread owing to afk-ishness and still only on my first cup of coffee today, so maybe I missed something in the 7 pages I just read ...
why does the listing describe it as a petrol estate?!
Tempting, but will hold out for a couple days and see how the pricing goes - my Xsara needs a couple hundred quid spent on it before it's saleable and I'm in no rush ...

Just a simple mistake by the advertiser which he later corrects in the description but strangley not in the listing. This could of course be a good thing indicating he is not a reguar car trader.Caffiend wrote: why does the listing describe it as a petrol estate?!

Good question! Although perhaps best not to get into a debate about which is better...Caffiend wrote:why does the listing describe it as a petrol estate?!
Back to the car, I reckon close to £1000 - the working A/C will be a sales point too. It's got a healthy interest already, with 6 days left to go.
Can we keep the discussion more about the car? (Although I'm guilty too!) It's an argument that doesn't have a right or wrong answer.

I agree , all cars potentially have an achilles heel.Roverman wrote: Lets agree to disagree shall we.
all BX's ( 5 in total )I have owned like all the cars I have owned have been my only car at the time and my daily driver,
Its not fair to include a partners car because certainly in my casr , my wife needs her car as much as I need mine so I cannot just borrow it
The only way to alleviate ( not eradicate because the unknown can always catch you out) any problems is regular servicing and maintainence checks.
My cars don't neccessarily have a dealer history but I keep reciepts for all work done and a log showing date/mileage /work done, I also make an entry in the service handbook of the car.
I certainly prefer to buy a car which has similar if not all history.
The more history you get with a car shows
1) the previous owner/s have cared for it
2) can potentially make you aware of any repetative problems the car has had
and 3) may give you a clue to what has not been done/needs doing.
The only cars that have ever let me down and stranded me at the side of the road were my CX estate when the throttle pedal snapped and on a seperate occaison when the coil failed and the Hyundai when the battery failed (auto so no bump starting )
not bad in 35 years of motoring

So the BX has a feature which other cars dont. In reality, for many, it doesnt and hasnt caused a problem. Equally other cars will have features or potential weaknesses with components specific to them.
Your trenchant and condescending tone seems to have lead you to ignore the bigger picture. You have a strong view but dont assume that it is fact - it isnt. Its a view. Youre also wrong to suggest that older cars like the DS 2CV arent everyday useable cars. There are lots of examples where they are.
In some ways its pointless assessing reliability or viability based on one feature (which is what you seem to be doing) because a car has numerous features which cause problems or have the potential to. Each component carries a risk and cars develop a reputation based on the collective of those parts and how they behave, not one one item. One feature can be significant but only if its a weakness. In my view a well sorted low mileage BX is a relieable car BECAUSE not much goes wrong and when it does its often cheap to put right.
So the BX has hydraulics which might go wrong. It makes no discernable difference because overall the car is reliable, even older hydraulics. Other cars dont have hydraulics but again its not significant when there are numerable other reasons for those cars to cause problems. This includes components specific to other cars in the same way as hydraulics are to the BX.

At last we're there! but to be fare you did raise other issues such as;BX Meteor wrote: Renewing the Octopus is a good idea, if not then since it is 18 years old, one has a potential extra hidden risk of failure that is only in the BX.
''A BX is not a car that you can rely on as a sole car to get to work each day'' which I think is the point most were disagreeing with
To aid your point from when I was planning a recent dive trip to the Orknies;
All my dive trips are usually done in my L300 dive bus which takes 3 of us plus kit and I sleep in it. On this occasion there would be only 2 of us plus we we're sleeping on the boat. So with this trip being over a thousand miles it made much more sense to go in the BX with 50+ MPG compared to the 25mpg of the old 4x4 L300. The only counter thought to this argument in my mind was the reliability of the fluid suspension of the BX compared to the mechanical of the L300. The descision was taken away when attendees on the trip changed and 3 of us ended up going in another friends new company X3, however although I don't like to admit it i'm sure if I had of gone in my BX loaded with heavy diving equipment with strict ferry timetables to be met I feel sure the potential failure of the fluid supspension would have been in the back of my mind for the duration.

Good point i'd forgotten about the A/C, this potentially opens it up to a current BX owner who although not normally in the market would like to upgrade to this rare option.
I'm enjoying the debate and althought it may not have a right or wrong answer it is a very prominent part of BX ownership that well deserves discussion IMHO and which we can be in no doubt is the reason it has been raised.mat_fenwick wrote:Can we keep the discussion more about the car?
