worn door hinge
Has anyone any experience of fixing worn door hinge? With front door almost closed, I can lift it up down a few mil - so i'm hoping that the wear is in the hinge pin rather than the hinge door/body itself. Steve

Not sure which bit you mean Tim?Roverman wrote:If the hinge has "opened out" a bit maybe you can give it some adjustment with a suitable hammer?
Good advice on the linked thread, especially about using a nail or similar (I use an allen key) to support the door while you get the other pin out. The correct tools make the job a lot easier too!

Re: worn door hinge
Hi Steve, sdelasal wrote:Has anyone any experience of fixing worn door hinge? With front door almost closed, I can lift it up down a few mil - so I'm hoping that the wear is in the hinge pin rather than the hinge door/body itself. Steve
If the door can be lifted a couple of mm, it's sounds to me due to the weight of the door, over time/use has worn or even possibly had a badly fitted replacement door in the past (rather than actual wear in the roll-pin/hinge ) due to the roll-pin material being of a much higher/harder grade of steel.
The wear is usually in the bore of the male part of the hinge (Which is welded to the door) but on the odd occasion I've seen some slight wear on the roll-pin hinges too, this wear is normally due to poor servicing/maintenance where some garages/Diy's don't lift off the top position plastic roll-pin cap (If still fitted) and fill the middle of the roll pin with oil which then gradually bleeds out (Provided the bottom plastic cap is also still in place) to allow lubrication into the door hinge/components and prevent premature wear !
The other place/point of wear usually takes place is on the under sides of the male hinge part/feature of the hinge (On the door side) and the top face of the lower hinge pair (Which is the lower one of the female hinge pair) which are welded to the 'A' post (For the front door's) and 'B' post's (For the rear door's) .
So guy's, get removing your plastic cap's and get lubricating to prevent premature hinge wear !

That's great advice - didn't know about the caps on the hinges so I'll be out there with the oil can later.
