Front brake pads

Post by ben »

Hi..need to replace my front pads on my BX 1.9 diesel estate ,will check what the local motor factors have tomorrow but looking on ebay there is a bewildering array of different makes with wildly varying prices.. any recommendations of the best or best value ones or which to avoid?

I've found that genuine Citroen pad have given the best life and most resistant to fade. I've used Ferodo, Mintex, and Quinton Hazell pads, which have lasted between 7 to 15k miles, but the last 3 pad changes have gone for OE and got over 20k miles. Can't say I've noticed a difference in stopping power normally, only after a few hard stops

I've used EBC Greenstuff pads on another vehicle, and found them to give good stopping power and fade resistance, but too early to say about the lifespan.

I use EBC Greenstuff pads, exceptional if you like "spirited" driving, life seems to be about 15K miles with my driving, but they dont seem to eat the discs as badly as "standard" pads..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Aren't the EBC pads supposed to produce less dust too or at least dust that doens't eat your bling rims?

I had EBC red pads on my old 9000 and no matter what I did they squealed like a pig.. I'd probably try the green pads though as I don't wash my car much

I have the green stuff pads on my BX, and I think they do make less dust.

Only done about 6,000 miles on them so a bit early to tell how long they will last.

I've had a few different brands & not really noticed any difference, but then again i try not to use the middle pedal much as it tends to slow my progress  Never measured how long they last, but i reckon approx 1.5-2yrs, unless the calipers stick on which has happened a few times over the years :x

Genuine Citroën OE pads every time. Good life, excellent performance.

But bed them in carefully.

if you can find TEXTAR pads they are the same are OE, lots of copper in the pad material

the other good ones i have found are MOTORQUIP, as MOTORQUIP is part of the PSA group

On a related note, make sure they're actually the right ones for the BX. I've bought from Ebay before and they've turned out to be for a Renault Express – same shape (hence wrongly identified by seller from silhouette catalogue) but half the thickness and they haven't got the locating peg on the back, so the self-adjusters wind themselves up and jam the brakes on hard about 20 miles down the road...

Ended up with a dusty old box of Ferodos from one of the local motor factors, after trying 3 others who didn't have any . Didn't bother with the Citroen dealer as everything costs 3 x as much and they don't know what a BX is
However when i got stuck in i discovered the off side had about a mm left and the nearside about 6 mm ,and the last bloke in there had omitted the spring clips on that side
Occasionally i get a bit overwhelmed with stuff to do on my other things and if i'm a bit flush i get lazy and get someone else to do things on the bx ,will think very hard next time :x
No one had any and i even tried citroen who would order some for £18 ,so i went down the scrapyard where i know of a bx estate but that had been stripped bare pretty much ,found some new looking ones that fit from an old ZX though 8)

£18 sounds pretty reasonable for a set of genuine pads - I used to pay not much less than that for pattern ones. What I tend to do now is keep a set on the shelf, then once I fit them I can search on eBay at leisure for a bargain set to keep in stock. Cheapest I've paid is £2.99 plus posting, most £26 all in.

The ZXs I've worked on were different to BX pads, are you sure they're correct? They had a spring clip fixed onto the outer edge of the pad versus the BX design with a separate spring clip.

Sorry the £18 was for the spring clips not the pads  I paid 20 for the Ferodo pads at the motor factor, who later said the spring kit would be £8.90 had they got any.
I'm not sure re the ZX clips but they seemed to do the job and were the same as the ones on the offside :?
It was an L reg ZX, same year as my BX.

how many pad fitting kits do you require

as i have a few brand new OE kits which contain 4 anti rattle springs, two wedge's and 4 wedges secureing clips,

i also have a selection of all the fittings S/H,

spoz if the dealer is asking £18 quid they must be worth £10 includeing carridge,

pm me your details if required

Plenty fitting kits with the spring clips on ebay if your factor can't get them although I'm not sure I would put the uneven wear down to these, it's usually the slider pins siezing up?
