I'm not into TD's, so if I was in your shoes I'd try and bag a 1.9D of some kind. They're usually quite cheap and make excellent smokers, whilst retaining some of the BX character. Most will tell you TD's are better, but for me the extra outlay of a TD over the 1.9D isn't all that easy to justify.

If GTI is on your list, you won't like the non-turbo diesel, as I take it you want something with reasonable acceleration.

Also the 4x4 can alledgedly be a bit fragile (never had one myself so I'm only saying what I've read others say).

Depends how much you want to spend on fuel :?:

4X4 the worst
GTi next
Some debate that TD's are better than N/A's, either way both are better than the 2 models above. Personally speaking, i reckon i get approx 10+% better economy on my n/a than my t/d, but perhaps my t/d wasn't one of the most economical around, its got a lucas pump, so that might be the problem?

Personally, i think the n/a would be your best choice, its got enough grunt to tow a trailer, is quick enough, easy to maintain & there are more of them to choose from than the other models you've listed.

I've towed a Jaguar XK150 behind a 1.9RD - it wasn't going far (about two miles) but the car could cope no problem with the weight - I'm sure a 1.9 would be fine.

I would get a TD then if your towing, the 1.9D is ok but will be struggle on hills with a trailer.

a trail bike and a trailer is about 350kg max!
Maybe my 1.7 and 1.9RDs were better than you think as I never had any huge issues when towing - even up Carter Bar - with a small trailer and car on the back. Slow to get to speed but cruised happily for thousands of miles at 55-65mph. Not that I would have driven faster but I'm sure 75-80 could have been possible on the flat. A regular tramp was up the rather steep and long hill north of Aberuthven - one would still be doing 50 at the top with the below combination.

If economy is important, go diesel. I'm with Messerschmitt in that the 1.9D is surprisingly good as a tow vehicle, albeit not very quick (though it didn't seem much slower towing my 2CV than it usually is!).

If you're not so fussed about economy, a GTi 8v is a good choice. Quite a torquey motor and good fun when not hitched up. The 4x4 is a bit of a connoisseur's choice due to fragility.

I wouldn't rule out a 16 or even a 14 though if you're only towing light weight things.

i think one or two of you are forgetting there are speed limits when towing a trailer which is 50mph on A roads and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways plus anyroad with more than 2 lanes you are not permitted in the far right hand lane.
If it is only a small lightweight trailer any BX is good it is only when you start towing caravans that a diesel comes into its own,i am sure it has been mentioned before but the bx was caravan club towcar of the year on more than one occaision!!

yeah there's nowt wrong with a 1.6 petrol either.

Anyway, his original list was "its come down to a TZD turbo diesel hathback or GTI or GTI 4x4" ...... so not sure why everyone is throwing all variants into the mix.

Depends on budget and DIY capabilities.

For cheapness and simplicity you want N/A diesel or 1.6 petrol.

Otherwise from your list, TZD, but if you have a bit of boy-racer in you get the GTI.

Insurance-wise the 1.6 and diesels are all the same... buying a 1.4 will halve your tax bill and put you a couple of ins groups down, and it's chained so no cambelt worries too.
