BX19RD for sale soon for parts.

Post by flyboy »

I have been told the main gearbox drive shaft bearings are on the way out and that my beautiful BX wont recover unless the gearbox is re-built. I dont want to give her to a scrap yard as the engine is toooo good. I would rather sell her to a BX enthusiast for parts or as a project to rebuild.

She is Ivory Cream in colour, a 5 door saloon, 1.9 Roto Diesel, 1988 F-reg, 113,000 miles and has been adapted to run on 50% straight vegetable oil which saved me £400 in fuel costs in 1 year! Most driving has been done on long distances up and down from Oxford to Cornwall where she cruises nicely. I have a fairly concise service history and have done loads of work to the hydraulics.

I am still driving her for a while but am looking to get a Citroen Berlingo van as its more practical for my business as a handyman. Please pass this mail onto anyone you think might be interested.

Offers welcome.

Andrew Hancock, Oxford.

There are web-sites that can tell you how to adjust your car to run on Veggy Oil, which as long as you notify the Inland Revenue - I understand is perfectly legal now.

From what I can gather after reading various web-sites on the matter - veggy oil is actually BETTER for your cars engine, though it can suffer with some sort of bio bug which commercial diesel doesn't have because of the additives (or summit like that anyway)

Apparently it is better to have an older car as the newer ones are a bit more special - but heres a couple of links to web-pages if you want to read up on it. I found these doing a basic search - so they must be plentiful...

Please accept that I do not make out to be an expert on this matter, but like most people who has owned a diesel, I have looked into the possibility of doing this. Plus I was looking forward to seeing the look on the face of the spotty teenager when you go to the counter at Tesco with a trolley full of veg oil .

I know... In fact I have done a fair bit of research about it, and am in the process of doing a 2-tank heated line system on my 1.9TD.

But... I wonder what has been "done" to this engine to apparently allow it to run on 50% SVO. I wonder, since nothing actually needs to be done to an XUD to allow it to run on 50% SVO. You can run a 50/50 mix in almost any mechanical-injection diesel engine without any mods at all.

That said, it's just possible that since it's a Roto-diesel (lucas CAV) pump, the seals may have been changed for SVO-tolerant ones. If so, then it's more valuable, as the Lucas pump is (IMHO) a better pump than the Bosch one, it's just that the factory fit seals in the Lucas units aren't SVO-tolerant.

Hopefully the OP will be back to let us know if it's actually had any form of modification.

Indeed (although the injection pump does grumble a little, and cold starting isn't exactly "smooth")

Which is why I'm even more interested to know what this apparent "modification" is.

Maybe a sticker in the fuel filler flap, stating that it can be done? "That'll be £289.99 please"

I do not want a new gearbox, I really need to get a Citroen Van for my business as it would be more practical. Im looking for a Berlingo/partner as they both have the same XUD 1.9 engine!!!!!!

Print out and follow these instructions to convert your BX Roto Diesel:
(I have a BX19RD)

Things to buy:

You need to get hold of a 'Fuel Cup Heater' from an old Peugoet 205 diesel
car like the one in the photos. You can pick one up from a car junk yard
for not much money.

You also need to buy a smaller fuel filter cartridge that is half the height
of the conventional one. It has to fit between the fuel cup and the fuel
filter body and all screw together and fit well.

Next buy some decent black rubber hoses (like ones in photos) to plumb the
whole thing in.

Jubilee clips to clamp down the rubber hoses to nozzles.

How to fit it all:

Take it apart and Clean the heater cup, making sure you clean away any deposits
inside it.

Next you nedd to drill out the brass nozzle on the heater cup (the one that
has a value inside it). If you do not drill this out then the water will
not flow through it properly. Put the whole thing in a vice to keep it steady
whilst you drill this out as big as you can so the water can flow through
freely.

Carefully remove the fuel filter from your BX and take it apart.

fit the new smaller height fuel filter cartridge and then put it all back
together.

fit all the hoses as shown in the photos. Think about using gravity to help
the water flow through everything so your water pump has as little work to
do as possible! (Study and look at the arrows in the photos which show the
direction the water should flow.)

make sure all the jubilee clips are tight to avoid any water leaks!!!

Because the whole filter unit with heater cup attached to its base is now
so much bigger than before you will need to think carefully about how to
attach this back to its housing properly. Its a tight squeeze to fit it
in that small space and I had to really press and bend the hoses so that
it got near the housing mount. The heater cup with its nozzles and hoses
will only fit in the space in one orienation. Feed the hoses to the nozzles
so that the water can flow as easily as possible!!! You will see from the
photo that I had to bolt the fuel filter unit onto the mont at a funny angle
- its the only way I could make it secure.

Once its all together just run the engine on idle speed to let the water
flow through the pipes and diesel flow through the fuel system again.

Check water level in your radiator - you will need to top this up to the
correct level!

Put your hand on all the rubber hose pipes once the engine gets hot so you
are happy it feels like the hot water is flowing around properly with no
'cold' spots where air might be trapped.

Remember the water will only flow once the engine gets hot and temperature
values open allowing water from the engine block to the radiator.

Once you are happy everthing is working then its time to add your vegetable
oil!!

I use pure rapeseed oil brought from supermarket. If I put 10 ltrs of Veg
oil into my fuel tank then I will add 10 ltrs of Diesel. This way the mix
is always 50%veg oil / 50%Diesel.
Dont worry about mixing it up as it will mix itself in the fuel tank.

You should only get a bit of smoke when cold starting but this dissapears
very quickly within 10 seconds. Your engine will sound quieter as the veg
oil reduces the Diesel engine 'knock' sound. My BX will still drive at speeds
of 70-90mph and I have run on veg oil for 3 years and done 30,000miles!!

mail me on andyhancock@tiscali.co.uk if you want me to send you images of modifications.[/img]

OK then, just to say,

If anyone is interested in taking this car on, I have a gearbox available which would suit this motor (reverse gear to the left & forward)

Could even fit it for a consideration £ :)
