This one go clunk!

Post by scooters »

I got a fright yesterday negociating the Himalaya range that is the Edinburgh road system. Having spent last weekend replacing the front springs on Mrs Scooters's Scooby Legacy Estate thanks to a 6 inch deep pot hole...took me several hours - £150 for the springs and £40 for a new set of quality spring compressors as the size of the flipiin things defeated my halfrauds jobs - several layres of knuckle skin and a smashed finger thanks to a socket shattering under torque I eventually had the car back on the road...

So I was smugly driving the BX yesterday in the knowledge that there were no springs to worry about when I heard an amighty CLUNK when going over a speed bump. Further driving resulted in worring creaking/clunking noises coming frow what sounded like the rear near side strut - worry immediately incase I had either damaged the strut or cracked the bell housing or a brake disc etc...

On returning home I discovered that I no longer had a spare wheel - and the noises were coming from the cradle which had been dragging along the ground - big relief - went back to the bump where some nice person had moved the wheel out of the road and positioned it prominently on the pavement with the following note:

"This wheel fell off from underneath a 1990 Citroen BX (non 16V) - if you are considering nicking it I suggest you don't unless you also drive a non 16V Citroen BX"

followed by a pencil written answer:

"Should you happen to find a spare wheel for a 1996 Honda Accord could you email me at x...."

collecting the wheel the lad who had left the original message drove past in a very nice 1988 Renault 5 Campus - we then bored each other for over an hour discussing French tin of the 80's.

I've been cleaning up my spare wheel tray, by cleaning I mean attacking with a wire brush to reveal all the rusted through holes now present on it (paint had been bubbling up and would appear to be all that remained in several areas)

probably enough left for it to be ok after a new layer of structural paint? but it did leave me wondering what the odds on the spare wheel falling out were.

My one had come a bit loose - also the nut was a bit slack - when I lived in the Highlands and had 3 miles of unmetalled roads to drive on I always tightened the nut so there was some real tension on the wheel and never lost one with this approach

The nuts on both my spare wheel carriers have rusted to the point they won't turn – I shove the carrier up as far as possible, wrestle the holding bit in place and trust to the spring of the tyre to hold them up there (they were previously done up quite tight so it's not been a problem so far). This is a good reminder that I really should sort it out properly one day.

Oh, and in case you thought no one had noticed, I assume the thread title is an homage to Molesworth, and the skool piano.... ? 8)

A few months back the wife was head Dorsetwards when there was a loud clunk and some sparky noises. It turned out that the wheel carrier had dropped but it wasn't the clip (which had rusted solid years ago and I have just managed to replace - nearly hen's teeth territory, that part). What had happened was that the pivots had worn so much that one arm of the carrier had actually gone right through. The cure was to weld on two big fat washers, which should do for a while.
