If I rang him up I'd ask
(a) how long have you had it
(b) if you have the same taste in cars as your shoes, why did you buy it
(c) why are you selling it
(d) how much did you pay for it
(e) have you T-cutted it
Looking at how well it has come up, and the history, its road legal and pretty much original (wheel trims and drivers seat asides) I dont think its bad value to be honest.

Just needs a set of TZD seats etc and some proper wheel trims and you have a rare beast, how many other people in the club have a P1 GTI 8v???
Hang on a minute there Tim ..... back in Octoberwhen it was up for £795 you said "Its an early one and getting rare but probably a bit steep", and everyone was going with the same view. If this chap bought it for say £700 and has driven it around a bit and T-cutted it, why is the same car suddenly better value

October is a long time ago in BX valuations

I must say, the chances of finding an early Mk2 GTi 8v, are very slim - OK not that much slimmer than three months ago, but hey. As it is with the messed about interior and the work needed etc. this side of £700 seems reasonable.

good point , new advertiser has put it has three owners and not 2 as it said with steptoes.
but then again, new owner has put
"The Citroen has been maintained by the Steptoe garage in Shoeburyness Essex since 1992. "
but steptoes ad said they had known the car all its life and its an 88 model,
done 745 miles between the ads

/\ yep, as I said "If this chap bought it for say £700 and has driven it around a bit and T-cutted it, why is the same car suddenly better value"

IMO a shill with the dealer involved, or a shill without the dealer involved .....which would not then be a shill I suppose ... what's the word for someone who buys a car, adds a few miles to it, does nothing else other than T-cut it, then sells it on at a proift .... profiteer is a mild word !!

EDIT: and don't forget, "Steptoe" was selling it with a 6 month warranty, which will be ending now, so this new owner has had the priviledge of putting some miles on it knowing that he can take it back to get it fixed, and now he's passing it on, possibly getting a few extra notes in his pocket (depending on what he paid, what he gets, and the amount of tax left on it) :-k

but dont forget he's spent £118.25 on the tax and has the costs of listing and selling on ebay to take into account

Should he have checked here to first to find out how much he could sell the car for?

Obviously be careful, but I fail to see how someone feeling there is a bit more value in it is suddenly dodgy/offensively expensive.

/\ of course not, but the logic is that back in October everyone was knocking the car at £795 with 6 months warranty from "Steptoe" ...but now suddenly this seller is a nice seller offering a car at a good price ....when all they have done is buy it, possibly at a knock down price (because Steptoe could not sell it even with 9,271 ebay views), added a few miles to it under Steptoe's supposed warranty, and made it shiny shiny

I just don't see the increase in value above what was said in October....does road tax, and spark plugs + leads etc (=£20 to shiny engine), and polish (=£20 to shiny body) add value ... surely real value is added when someone has done real renovation to the engine/transm or suspension/brakes or body or paintwork.

EDIT:
-in Octoberwhen it was for sale at £795 it was estimated as being worth £400 and Tim and several of us agreed the price was steep
-in December there was a discussion about best time to buy a cheap car (Feb was said), implying cars should be cheapest now on ebay
-there have been several discussions about the prices of BX's and when the prices might go up and it was concluded that in the present economic climate it will be a while yet
-"steptoe" had it MOT'd to Aug 2012, but this seller has it MOT'd to Jan 2013 ...nice of them to add a new MOT 8 months before the other MOT expires scratch...
-"steptoe" was selling without tax in October, this seller is selling it taxed to June but says "I am very reluctantly having to sell my gorgeous BX as I no longer have a garage for storage" ....is that just blarny when it's obviously got new tax & MOT (again) to sell
-seller only bought the spark plugs, dist cap, wiper blades, + some logos, in January (buying history)
-my notification email from ebay yesterday at 12:06 has B.I.N. £780 (a BIN change is in the revision list at 12:53) ...BIN is now £830
-I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, it might be worth the money, and so what if this seller is on the make
-and ..... I've forgotten what I was saying now, it's a fantastic bargain, wow I want that car  8) #-o

-IMO this seller may have genuinely bought it before xmas ("steptoe" delivered it un-taxed) then changed their mind about keeping it and tarted it up last month to sell on ; or, they're in cahoots with "steptoe".
-If you didn't want to buy it from "steptoe" then why buy it from this seller. :|
-If you do want to buy it and consider what was said in October is irrelevant, then fair enough, but go take a look at the car and don't be fooled by the shiny shiny.
-I promise I will say no more on it ...feel free to call me a pedant, been called that before here ...but I like writing s*** when listening to trance :P

as in all cases a car is only worth what a buyer is prepared to pay for it ,this one has good mot and tax but lets not forget the bodywork issues (paint in places and front n/s wheel arch )

My meteor had almost a full mot was £250 but has issues that are likely to cost another £200 to £250 to put right, ( including the rear wheel arch repair ).
Ok a 1.6 meteor isnt as rare or desirable as a GTi but for under £500 I am happy

The GTi 8v isnt the most popular BX, most want a diesel or a valver, but as its been said so many times before they are a great drive and not that bad on fuel, this car is 24 years old now and with that in mind its in great nick.

Given the dwindling numbers in a few more years there wont be any left at all, which is a shame, jus TZD estate's and a handful of 16v's.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

We'll never know the seller's reasons for selling (unless he joins us on here) so I'm not going to speculate. Personally I'd always want to find out the reason for selling, especially if the seller hasn't owned it long. I doubt he's going to make enough to retire comfortably on though!

Polish makes a car appear more desirable to most people, and even if you consider yourself not to care about cosmetics, ask yourself whether you'd pay an extra £50 on an otherwise identical car which was washed/polished, simply because it gives the impression it's been better cared for?

If anyone does buy this, I have a good condition matching driver's seat if required.
