Waitrose bx fleet Aug '88

Post by simonbx17 »

For the first time ever there was a mass fleet renewal, August 1988 at Bracknell outside the workshops known as CVW, 17 BX's in one go plus some Escorts. Citroen were busting a gut to get into fleets and were apparently offering silly prices. My dad was taking quite a few photos for Waitrose at the time so added these to my 'catalogue'!
Such a mass renewal was never repeated so this occasion was unique.
Dad got a feeling he'd already picked mine up (white BX F reg.) and parked it in the main car park so it might not be in the photo.

Good historic photo's those, Simon. :D

Do you know what the mix of models were within the 17 ? I mean, did they differentiate the spec dependent on the drivers job function?

i'm not sure with regards to spec inrelation to job title i'll have double check with dad on this, some of his college's did get turbo's.

From memory, these where mostly 17RD's but they did have a few DTR turbo's. including an estate which introduced my as a kid to the power of bx turbo power.

i also remember the introduction wasn't smooth as a few of them suffered from their exhaust's chaffing through hydraulic pipes (power steering pipe's i think) and yes they were spec'd with power steering!!

This is where my love affair started for the bx.

Waitrose did go on to supply zx's, xantia's and C5's he also recalls riding in the managing director's xm!

Aye. Deffo a Mk4 Escort, though the Mk3 Orion (second car in) is confusing me a bit. That wouldn't have been new in 1988 would it?

EDIT - Actually a Mk1 Orion, based on the Mk3 Escort.

more info from dad........

One or two Heads of Departments got XM's, they had a wider range of choice, us lower down got 1.9RD's, one or two who needed automatics got petrols (not sure of engine size, definitely NOT 1.4's) one spec up from an equivalent RD, they had a glazed panel behind the C pillar (TRS/i). I did have a DTR turbo estate pool car which flew, in fact on a hump bridge near Tamworth I had all 4 wheels off the road and my mate hit his head on the roof lining not realising how fast they were !!
1990 was the last mass influx of BX's and they were all gone by about 1994 and we had mainly Vauxhalls, ZX's then Xantias.
I can let you have the BX pictures one at a time if you want.

I was just going to update you- most of those shown would have been 17RD's, including mine, 19RD's were for those who did 20,000+miles .
That batch was supplied direct from Citroen UK in Slough, only did later batches come through Concorde Wokingham.

My 16TRS came from Concorde Garage in Wokingham!

BX Autos were only available as 16TRS/19TRS by that age so I imagine it was the former.

Great story, thanks for sharing it with us. :D

Gosh that 16 is beautiful. Makes me want to get my olympic blue TZi up to standard.

Any chance someone can send me some fogs and a front splitter?

Yeah, but the fogs don't work - do they? Having said that, everytime I ask myself ; 'whats the nicest looking BX you can possibly think of', WTF pops straight into my mind - it is truly lovely. (personally, I'd get some proper Bosch wiper blades instead of those trendy hyper-glidey wipey things - SO not 'period'! :D

Quite agree on the colour Simon, it took me a while to get one that colour, it was serviced by Concorde for the first few few years and then BL Autos. In 2005 at the age of 16 it had done 22,000 miles

The foglamps arent wired up yet, but I have the switches etc for it, so when the better weather comes....
