Diesel engines just go on forever - blah blah blah. Diesel engines are very frugal on fuel - blah blah blah - 60+mpg at a constant 56mph, blah blah blah. A carburettor? Don't make me laugh - blah blah blah.

I think diesel engines are great - they enable you to save enough money to run a petrol car for fun!

Sadly it seems modern diesels arent any more reliable than petrols, I do agree though they are alot more frugal.

I think it's 6 and two 3s in the end. Like which do you prefer - brown sauce or red? There's only one way to find out . . . :D

That's interesting - I've heard that too but mainly from unhappy diesel owners. Would you say you get a similar number of diesel car problems as petrol in the workshop?

A BX16v is a lot of fun. A BX diesel makes a lot more sense though. I love the simplicity of older diesels. None of this ignition crap. French carbs of the 1980s/1990s seem to be built entirely from fromage and are generally hopeless.

Hmmm. Seems a bit unfair to choose the most knackered BX currently in road legal condition to represent diesel engines!

Agreed. Although the Red Baron did suffer when the temp dropped. The very early morning drive to Brussels in very cold and icy conditions caused the engine to behave a bit erratically. On Sunday in particular, in minus 13 it was impossible to start.

only joking Ian hence the smiley,
I have only ever had one diesel a 2.2 toyota lucida, underpowered when it was working properly and bloody expensive when it went wrong.
I have never been left stranded by a petrol engine car but spent many a frustrating hour trying to sort the van out, perhaps I was just unlucky

A Lucida? No wonder you don't like diesel! I've tried many petrols and diesels and I must say I generally prefer the diesel option - before this common rail nonsense.
