Driver age makes a big difference, but I have found the following over the years:

Adrian Flux will happily insure a classic as a main vehicle, with agreed value, no claims and 12000mile limit - I'm paying £126 for the GS fully comp, which is £70 less than the BX14 was last year, and £120 than it would have been this year. They were still £50 less than anyone else for this sort of policy mind! I've been with them for the last 3 years as they've been the cheapest when I look at comparison sites.

NFU are good value for collection policies, but there are restrictions - you need to have a modern car insured with them, and they will not include a Land Rover in the policy as its a commercial vehicle, even my 56 year old series 1!

Sureterm seem to be quite happy to insure kit and modified cars without charging the earth.

Lancaster are expensive.

Footman James almost seem to pluck figures out of the air - not only can quotes vary wildly for people living in the same town with similar cars and insurance history, but they can vary almost as much if you obtain quotes for the same vehicle at different times of year!

Comparison sites - Confused.com seem to be the best at finding me a cheap policy, both for cars and motorcycles - sometimes cheaper than going to the company direct! Compare the market are also as good, but the same policy from the same company seems to cost a couple of quid more from them. Money Supermarket & Elephant are expensive.

Direct Line and AA woudn't even quote meas the car is too old.

That actually depends on the Land Rover, if it is a station wagon it is not listed as a commercial vehicle and they will insure it. NFU used to be the best for Land Rover insurance (not on classic car policy) but Land Rovers vary so much I had a Limited edition 'Black' TD5 110 Twin Cab Pick up which was the all singing and all dancing version with leather seats electric windows, air con, CL, Hill descent control, traction control, abs, fancy alloy wheels, rollcage, roof rack spots, side steps, fancy stereo etc. etc. I didn't like it as it felt like a hairdressers Land Rover so I sold it and bought a very basic TD5 110 twin cab pick up with no thrills what so ever. When I tried to just swap my insurance they wanted another £400 because it was a commercial vehicle. I told themit was an identical vehicle, chassis, engine and gearbox etc. but was less likely to get knicked as it wasn't the all singing all dancing one. Thet said the other one was listed as a car and the basic one a light commercial so there was nothing they could do :(

What's the cut off with these companies for it to be counted as classic? Seem to remember a few posts where the later registered cars weren't included?

Cut off age appears to vary depending which company. I can get my 90 TGD insured on classic but nobody will insure my TDZ on classic as it is registered as a 96 even though it was built 92/93.

Most insurance companies look at 20 years minimum for classic insurance. With what I generally drive, I have the opposite problem, as a lot of companies don't like insuring cars over 30 years old as a main car.

I was paying £120 a month (!) to insure my crappy focus, they wanted £160 a month to insure the 8valve gti....went with someone called classic line for £800 for the year which seemed cheap after what I had been paying. 24 year old male, 6 years no claims, no issues no nothing...,.utter pisstake.

Endsleigh are good if you're a yoof.

BX16, 21yr old parking overnight in rural NY, 2 years no claims, 4 years license and 1 speeding ticket for £570. And super-helpful and courteous UK call centres.

Will probs give Adrian Flux a ring before I have to renew next week, however.

I'm a bit older, but the problem I have is trying to get multiple vehicle insurance - with one modified BX, a DIY campervan conversion, and a DIY installed LPG system on the Discovery! Really limits the choice of people I can go with, I just wish I could find somewhere that would cover me and not the vehicles. I'm not that bothered about theft cover really, just something priced in line with whatever the deem the riskiest vehicle, then (logically) I should be covered on the rest of the fleet.

I never knew that, so our insurance might go up as they get older. :(

The trick is to own several old cars. They seem happy enough if you split the mileage across more than one car. At least, this is the excuse I use to the other half...

The XM is only 12 years old and Sure Term direct automatically put it onto a classic policy.

Just got mine insured on a classic policy. Most seem to want the car to be at least 20 years old, and i'm on a 3000mile limit (which is more than enough).

I found Footman James to be rather interesting. Got there quote online, £226, not bad i thought, went to buy it but the computer had truncated my name. So i called them to change the name, which they did, and then the price became £450!!! Told them that the online quote was £226, but apparently they couldn't match that, event hough it came from there online quote system!

Ended up with SureTerm in the end, £186, not bad really given that my no claims has expired, apparently!
