The point of this "round thingy" in addition to being able to deliver a good volume of fuel at low pressure is to prevent "Vapour Lock" which will be more prevalent on hot days and when idling in traffic.

Without the return line some fuel in the supply line can become hot enough to turn gaseous.

Now you given me something to think about with the "Vapour Lock"

Something that has been annoying me in the TZS with regards to cornering at speed, I have this issue where the car stutters like a loss of fuel going to the carb. Now you got me thinking maybe there is a fault in that cylinder gizmo.

A swap out from the TRS is on the cards to confirm that!

So is it a ''round thing'' or ''cylinder gizmo''? lets make our minds up :)

/\ I give up .... it's not me that needs one.

I have found all the following after Willy came up with "fuel vapour separator" (good work dude)

Wikipedia

ebay example

another ebay example

Willy's link again Ford Manuals

Mick it's also mentioned in Mk1 Golf owners club !!

And using Malcolm's insight (charcoal filters)

wikipedia

got lost in this thread

PS .... I'm determined to disconnect the output on the one on my car to see what comes out when the engine is running ...might be some special ants in there (I don't think it can be opened up)

That happens on mine with the elactric pump,
Usually resolved by dropping down a gear and keeping revs up a bit

Float height too low? We used to get the same problem with the race 2CV on long sweeping bends as all the fuel in the float chamber would be forced to one side. Cured by tilting the engine up on one side (which side depended on the particular racetrack!).

The picture's rubbish but on page REF-15 (Peugeot 309) the Haynes refers simply to said item as the "canister"
Canister A container in an evaporative emission control system; contains activated charcoal granules to trap vapours from the fuel system

/\ well if I rang a dealer, I think the conversation would go like this:
me "can you get a canister for a Citroen BX petrol"
dealer "do you mean an oil filter"
me "no it's for the fuel system"
dealer "do you mean an inline filter"
me "no it's a round thing with three pipes"
dealer "three pipes, where do they go to"
me "one from the pump, one to the carb, one to the tank"
dealer "we don't have the BX details any more, sorry can't help"
me "I think it's also called a petrol swirl pot"
dealer "why didn't you say that in the first place"
