New Recruit...

One thing tha puzzles me is the interior, although the seats have obviously been swapped at some point (they should be grey tweed i assume like my other one) it has a black dash and cappings all round. I thought the TGD's all had grey like my other one???
Image

A few jobs to do but nothing major. Asside from bodging up the rot in the rear end i have the following to sort out

1. Clutch padal is very low and VERY stiff/sharp? (it had a new clutch 4 years & 30k ago so should be fine)
2. Rev counter sometimes work, sometimes doesn't. Other times it's just erratic! Could just be a loose connection, where is the feed? (Bosch pump)
3. Fuel gauge comes and goes, probably a tired sender unit.
4. (most annoying one) Got a knock on the OSR, prev owner changed the arm as they thought it was the bearings but hasn't cured it and buggered if i can tell what it is! Only does it at low speed.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

pretty sure i have two (genuine) diesel clutch cables, will trade for labour :D

I reckon you should try to hyper mile it, duct tape the panel gaps, remove the rear spoiler, tray the underside of the rear, ditch the spare, remove some of the damping, ditch one of the washer bottles, etc etc see just how low you can get the weight. Polish for aero stability.

Plan is to spend as little on it and keep it as poverty spec as possible! (apart from i MAY have to fit a stereo as i'm getting bored of my own singing!)

And there was me thiking you were gonna swap that big tub of Swarfega for the labour

I had a 1992 TGD with black cappings - can't recall the dash colour but I thought it was grey. Jayboy probably remembers better than I do! It definitely had grey tweed though.

I wonder if the dash is that colour because it's a K plate car so might be one of the last made in TGD spec & they didn't have any grey one's left? Either way, should be a nice motor 8)

When you figure this out let me know! Pattern I noted is mine works on the cooler days until the engine warms up to a certain temperature. With the crappy summer this year have been able to discover that

Alternator is driven by the alternator on some of the diesels IIRC. Or I have seen some with a pickup where a petrol would normally have a TDC sensor on the top of the bell housing.

As its very last of the line before they dropped the TGD they did stick the black interior but kept the grey seats facings, always thought they looked very smart in my book.

I know Grenman had a correct interior for your car, depends if your arsed and he wants to sell it of course.

Early P1 Gti seats always go baggy like that.

:? Is that some kind of perpetual motion machine?

It's common on diesel engines for the rev counter to come off the W terminal on the alternator but not aware of the XUD doing this, certainly in the BX era.
This might help Jay (and Kiwi!), there's some pictures further down of where the sensor is. I've come across a few which only failed when warm so wonder if it's a connection failure inside the sender that's being pulled apart by expansion with heat.

Nice save! Looks very tidy on the outside.

Don't want to be all doom and gloom about the knocking, but if there's rot in the rear end, hasn't hit the subframe has it?

Absolute alternator current reads revs. Absolutely.

AS this was my car maybe I can answer why the interior doesnt match. It was robbed out of a black gti that was going to scrap but we werent able to swap the door cards as one was badly damaged.Hope you find that bl@@dy rear end knock as it drove me nuts. Good luck.
