Cracked Windscreen

Post by kiwi »

So finally get a week (nearly six days) of dry weather and an excuse to get the airconditioned TZS out and about! which since the arrival of the diesel TXD has along with its partner the underused TRS been in the back of the garage.

 Spotted just at the bottom of the driverside windscreen a 1 inch crack had appeared eminating from a stone chip on the black tinted surround bit.

Of course that was the start of it growing and pretty much making the BX undrivable with the light glint off the crack. The only theory I have as to why is the lower angle of sun coming through the garage window exposing it to temperature stress.

Heres the worst part! The glass repairers are struggling to find a new windscreen (its been nearly a week), worse the WOF (MOT) is due on that unlikely date April 1st.

So whats the likelyhood the insurance could write the car off if they can not find a windsreen for it? :(

Well, windscreens are available, even if not down there. So it’s just the economics of getting one to you and whether that exceeds a percentage of the car’s value. I suppose in theory they could, but it would remain your property – I’d expect them to pay out for the value of the car (determined how?) minus the scrap value and any excess. So if the worst happened you may be able to source one elsewhere and get it shipped?

Windscreens are fairly hard to find here in Australia, so I used a 2nd hand one when I needed one last. Might be a possibility for you too?

We took the screen out of the parts car and had a local guy seal it in to the 16Valve for just $70AUD.

Most windscreen mobs should be able to remove and reseal a windscreen for you reasonably cheaply I should think?

Finding a secondhand windscreen wont be a problem...heck I have one sitting in another car at a real push.

If the car does become an economic write off due to unavailability of parts then the payouut wont be to bad as it is an Agreed Value. Given the dramas the TZS is having with its cooling system again I might be tempted to remove it from the road with such an offer and spend the cash on salvage and getting the TRS up to speck again.
