Mot failure, need a welder in northants

Post by Vince Pepper »

Has anyone used or knows of a good welder in the Northampton area, my 16v failed on 2 counts, o/s near suspension mounts & o/s near the sill beneath drivers door, looking to have a proper job done, not bodgy cover up for mot.

We can do them at work http://www.southwaysautomotive.co.uk but we're not local to you. But we do have an in-depth knowledge of BX 16v's

That looks like an interesting place that you work Kitch.

Just out of interest Vince, how much does this guy charge for these two areas of welding? I was thinking that if you know what you're doing perhaps three to four hours work? 150/200 quids?

Not sure of final cost yet as i'm awaiting a call, the front suspension hole is below the washer bottle, a fairly straightforward fix allegedly, the other hole is behind the bottom plastic side skirt near the sill, hence the call once the welder has investigated, he felt £200 would cover it, there is a hole behind the n/s rear light which he will fix too. The garage that mot'd the car wanted £750 to weld it

It's not just the welding I suppose but the removal of everything to get access, then the prep of the hole then afterwards the priming sealing etc.

I was curious what a 'professional' would charge as I did these two very welding spots yesterday on my 16v - a couple of the favourite weak spots on the BX. I suppose it all depends as to what degree the rust has taken hold. The hole in the floor was not as far gone as my yellow break which required two days work, re-building the sill, large floor area etc but the washer bottle hole was severe and it's also an awkward junction of different angles. I also have corrosion further forward in the inner wing so ABS controller and air box out.

The guy who wanted 750 was obviously trying his luck!
