Steer well clear. Or alternatively, buy it and then refund me the £175 I've already paid him on deposit. Otherwise I'll want half the car since that's what I've paid for.
More details via PM, and to be added to this thread soon.

At the point when I paid the deposit it wasn't on ebay, you see. What's happened is I agreed the sale with him, paid him half, and agreed to pick the car up and pay the rest on collection. Fast forward a couple of weeks, he decides he wants the rest of the money upfront (bear in mind I haven't even seen the car!!) or he "will assume I no longer require the car". A day later it appears on ebay with a few details changed from when it was offered to me (namely the "big end gone" has changed to "engine rattle"...) He won't return my calls, same old story really...Gibbo2286 wrote:Advice has to be always "Don't pay a deposit to anyone on Ebay."

Thanks for your support Phil. I absolutely intend to. I've emailed him and offered him a final chance to make good on the deal we agreed, which is more than he deserves, but I do still want to believe the best of him, I just think he's in financial trouble. Or rather he is financial trouble.
Anyway, if he doesn't reply by tonight then I have a few spare hours on the train which I will spend writing to ebay/north wales police/solicitors.
I know I've been stupid though, just want to warn others off!

Hopefully this won't sound too naive, but even if it's in e-writing surely you have that "contract and conditions of sale" with him, and both parties have agreed to it. I'd definitely recommend threatening him legally though even if you don't plan to, with any luck he'll just play ball. Ebay also has its policy on misrepresentation: http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/Sold-as-seen- ... 0002394120djoptix wrote:At the point when I paid the deposit it wasn't on ebay, you see. Sorry to hear about that though and good luck.

Why don't we all bombard him with questions like;
Are you going to return the deposits you have already taken on this car before accepting others?
He might buckle if he gets enough questions in his ebay 'ask seller a question'

I think many missed that Rob didn't buy it via ebay so there can be no comeback that they'll be interested in.
However, you can contact Paypal (even if the money was a "gift") and remember, if the payment was funded from a credit card you'll have automatic protection between the card company and Paypal (this usually varies but normally starts around £80-90 purchases).
Im i right in thinking this car is the one Linguist has been trying to shift for ages?
