How do you work out the age of your BX?

Post by Mothman »

Hi,
do you all use the date of registration as the age of your motor or the producton date?
Just looked up Sophie and she rolled off the production lines on 16/10/85 but is registered as an 86 motor. So really she is an 85 motor?

The date code is on the A post by the tyre pressure sticker.

I generally describe mine as a 1986 - the registration date - but mine's also a 1985 build. November I think.

Nice one, BX Club. You say an error has occurred and the post cannot be made, yet post it anyway and then duplicate the post twice.

I use a couple of twigs fashioned into a divining rod, while some of the chassis rolled out of the factory late 1990, an alarming amount of the car is from 1991 with some from 1988 and probably earlier!

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS USE THE BUILD DATE!!!!!!!

Years ago, I used to work in a motorcycle dealer, in the parts department.
You'd be surprised at the number of people who just use the number plate year as the age of the machine.
This was all very well, until they wanted to buy parts for their vehicle,
I'd say what year is it? It's XYZ reg...
You just wouldn't believe the arguements I used to get into, when I refused to supply any parts until they give me the frame number!

Of course, when they did give me the frame number, they were usually surprised when i informed them their vehicle was in fact 2 years older than they had told me, because it was sat in a crate unsold at a dealers!

Well if I used the registration date the TZS is 2 years newer than the build date because it was in demo storage, but with the TXD if I use its registration date in NZ it is 3 years newer but then it was used on the roads of the UK so registratin date becomes irrelevant.

So yes the build date is when I would age my cars from.

btw, thats useful information about the build date on the door piller. Learned something new from that.

Thank you for being a professional!

My other half's Fiesta obviously sat around a bit, at a time when Ford were giving them a facelift (different lamps front and rear). More than once I've bought light bulbs for it, giving the registration date, and been sold the wrong ones. It wouldn't have happened if they'd insisted on the build date!

It's amazing how long some vehicles can stand around before being sold. I know of XM's, 2CV's and Skodas that were registered at least 3 years after their build dates, and I once came across a Triumph Herald that spent so long at the dealership it ended up being sent back to Triumph to be rebuilt to the later spec in an effort to sell it - bet that wouldn't happen today!

Since aquiring my Urals I did some research on them and supposedly my 1975 Cossack is particularly rare for being sold the same year it was built
