To be fair, he didn't have the funds to keep up with the servicing. It's a credit to the BX that it just keeps going with such little attention! He was also good enough to sell her back to me, so I've no complaints. The car might have suffered a bit, but it got him out of a tight spot and it is only a car! Albeit one I like a lot...

Work is now underway to get the car ready for its MOT. I'm not confident at the moment, but we'll see. The Mk1 has an MOT after all!

It's really not happy starting at the moment and occasionally misfires. I'm hoping a change of fuel filter will cure this. It's been run on veg but hasn't had a fuel filter change in over 30,000 miles. The exhaust still smells a bit veggy! Nicer than burnt diesel I must admit but I'm feeling hungry now...

That kind of lack of basic maintence really annoys me, its piss easy to do & costs just £'s, even i can bleeding change a fuel filter on a diesel :twisted: Rant over, hopefully the car will now get the attention it deserves.

Would have thought a clogged fuel filter would be likely to only give problems at high fuel demands, but sounds like it needs to be changed anyway!

There might be an air leak too. Finding it won't start unless I give the primer a good few pumps and when I do, it sounds a bit squeaky. Do I need TWO new primer heads?!

Oh sod. I've just changed the wrong bleedin' wheel bearing! Not pleased - though the one I've changed didn't exactly look brilliant anyway. Booked in for MOT 10am tomorrow as well. I think I'll be cancelling that.

Now broken tools trying to get the other hub nut off. Quite. Pissed. Off. MOT tomorrow now cancelled. Not sure how to proceed.

Popping to the garage involves a 12 mile journey. I'm not sure I trust it. It really is VERY knackered. If I got it to the garage, I'd just ask them to fit the bearing seeing as they've got all the kit.

Just discovered that the 'slight' LHM leak from the front right corner is a snapped strut return pipe, so that needs to be changed before an MOT anyway. Oh well. More parts ordered! I'm now staying out of the garage for a bit...

There are times when I wonder just why I bother trying to fix cars that have such ridiculous design faults. Why are BX calipers so downright sh*t? Why are the bleed nipples so small and why do the fuggin' things ALWAYS seize and/or round off? And who was it (this idiotic fault is shared with many vehicles, including my Maverick) who designed the sliding single-pot caliper? He needs smacking around the head. Preferably with a seized single-pot caliper.

As you may have gathered, I'm having some trauma with the BX's brakes. New wheel bearing fitted, new strut return fitted (that bloody clip is another pain in the arse. Replaced with a cable tie but using the metal backing piece) but I think the caliper must have a fault as the inside brake pad is worn almost down to the metal. I also had to undo the brake pipe as I couldn't undo the brake pipe support clip due to yet more stupidly crap bolts. Looks like I'm going to have to buy another bleedin' (geddit?) caliper as the nipple is shafted on the caliper in my spares pile too. RUBBISH!

The front caliper bleed nipples tend to be fine, the rears on the other hand just seem to seize in big style, aaaargh!! Just re-grease the caliper slider to get it sorted until you can buy a new replacement one. I wouldn't bother with a recon kit as they are usually more expensive than the calipers that i've seen on e-bay.

With the nipple stuck, I thought 'sod it' and bought a new (recon) caliper. No point having a caliper I can't bleed, especially if it's starting to seize. Amazing on Ebay how prices vary. Why would I pay over £100 for a caliper? As you say, the rebuild kits can be pricey and from experience, rebuilding one can be a right pain! (Did so on the Mini and a previously-owned Range Rover. Decided not to bother again!)

Interesting views on rebuilt calipers - I purchased two reconditioned ones when I fitted vented discs to mine 70k miles ago. Both have since been changed again; the first about 20k miles ago when a seal failed and I was rapidly loosing LHM when braking, the second more recently as the sliders had lots of play (I suspect that they had been rebushed with a very soft material). The rubber used on them started perishing very quickly, so I was not too happy with the quality overall.

If there was a way to know that the rebuilt calipers for £100 would last twice as long as those for £50 then I might consider it, otherwise a rebuild kit (for me) is looking more tempting. I've not actually stripped a BX caliper though, but the conventional (non handbrake multi pot) ones I've re-sealed went smoothly enough.

Caliper (or brake cylinder for that matter) rebuilding depends on cost - I bought a couple of rebuild kits for stock when I discovered I had to shell out over £120 for a rear caliper for the GS. If you think that's bad, a land Rover series 1 master cylinder was £250 last I checked :shock: :cry:
