This is very amusing. I think we will have to agree to disagree. Some people do like to give inanimate objects feelings and emotions, just as some people humanise animals. To be honest, I find that somewhat stranger.

Just back from another drive in Bex/The Green Tiger/BX Safari etc. It really is so splendid to be in. Why did I ever sell it?! The Reliant Scimitar/Saab 9000/Range Rover etc just failed entirely to beat it.

My joy may have been tarnished slightly. I think one of the brakes was binding on a trip out earlier. Weather is truly horrific. Our journey got halted by a fallen tree (we were about 5 cars back - scary. One squashed Focus but no injuries luckily). I'll have a look at the brakes if the weather improves. Not a good day as the 2CV is filling up with water quite rapidly at the moment too!

Ha! You haven't seen the underside. They're both rust buckets!

Also, the clutch has gone out of adjustment again. The bite was really high, so I adjusted it a bit and it felt better. When we got back after our little jaunt today, I couldn't get reverse at all (had to stop the engine, select reverse then restart) and the other gears are very notchy - how it was when I got it. Knackered clutch or have I just failed to find the sweet spot? Not that I'm going to investigate it just at the moment. It's bloomin' pouring down.

Re: the clutch - when I got it off you I had to adjust it. I put it down to a weak spanner hand on your part but then I had to adjust it 3-4 times over the course of the time I owned it. It seemed the locknut kept coming loose. I'm not sure exactly how a locknut can stop locking, but that would seem to be the issue.

Certainly it doesn't help when I fail to tighten the lock-nut, which is what happened yesterday I think. Oops.

Clutch does feel a bit inconsistent Kevan, so I might need to have a look at the pedal box. Clutch fork seems ok at least.

LH front brake is definitely binding though. When I get a mo, I'll have to see why. Handbrake cables aren't that old so I'm hoping it's not another bloody seized piston.

Well I've had a look at the iffy brake. Handbrake is releasing cleanly, though it does seem a little sticky after footbrake application. Pulled out the slider and greased it, as well as where the pad touches the caliper at the bottom. A test drive reveals no issue so I'll see how it goes with a 100 mile trip this afternoon.

I've 'repaired' the loose filler neck by the simple method of using larger screws. I didn't have any suitable bolts that were long enough. We'll see how long this lasts...

This one's stumping me a bit. Went to pick up a printer today. All seemed fine but a quick check of the front wheels when we arrived showed that the nearside wheel was hot. Not just the nuts, the entire wheel. Quite impressive given how much water we'd splashed through.

Drove off to a nearby town for lunch and when we got there, the nearside wheel was cooler but the offside one seemed slightly warmer. Hadn't tackled any serious hills in that time. Odd!

Drove back home. Stopped after about 20 miles and checked the wheels. Both were cool, including the nuts so no binding at all. Sodding things. I hate brakes you don't trust!

Otherwise, she drove pretty nicely. Clutch is still a bit peculiar. Bites early, but doesn't bite very hard. Release it more and you get a sudden full bite and you're away. Feels very different to the Mk1 which is much more progressive. It does ride well though - perhaps not as well as it could, but nice enough. Some clonking at the front end - it had an offside wishbone and ARB links during my first ownership, but that's probably at least 40,000 miles ago now.

The brakes may have had to settle back in a bit after you had them apart - if they may be fine now [-o<

Hope so Mike - I'm planning to drive to Cambridgeshire in it at the weekend! It's also losing coolant around the 'stat housing. That's because I made a mess of changing the 'stat so I can only blame myself for that one! Isn't losing much but I'll need to sort it fairly soon.

Also, forgot to mention that the PAS is a bit hit and miss (not quite literally but we did have a few moments today!). Why did I think it was driving well again?! Belt tension is fine, pump seems ok (car rises very promptly). I'll see if I can check the filters this week.

Regarding the PAS - I had a chat with Phillipe at Medway Citroen and he said that even though the LHM filters are very good, some very fine particulate matter will get through them and eventually clog up a tiny valve inside the rack, and the only way to fix it is to remove it, open it up and manually clean the tiny valve. A days work for a fully kitted out Citroen specialist garage, a monstrous undertaking for the hobbyist... may be slightly easier to replace the rack. Or it could all be a massive lie to extract money from a chump.

Might be another dose of Hydraflush then! Did the trick last time - probably about 40,000 miles ago...

Rachel thought I'd lost it at one point as we were cornering pretty swiftly (as I do) but not as smoothly as is my usual style as I was trying to react to the changing assistance! I was still in perfect control but I did take it a bit easier after that...

Wondering if the brake issues are flexis. Neither looks exactly fresh and certainly not replaced on my shift - which began 45,000 miles ago.

On the plus side, she's going like the proverbial clappers for an NA diesel.

Feels ok today. Brakes have behaved and the steering feels better. I put in the remainder of the hydraflush I had knocking about (probably less than a litre) so in a few hundred miles, it'll get a drain, refill and filter clean.

Ignoring mechanical maladies, I turned my attention to tunes today. Initial inspection wasn't good. I put a pair of Alpine speakers in the doors when I had it. One of them appears to have blown up. Very distorted - when it works at all. I also put some cables through to the rear footwells so I can connect up some rubbish speakers-in-boxes that I've had for a few years now. Only one of the cables remained but happily it was long enough to cut into two. I find large rear speakers essential to get any sort of bass response in an estate. The boxes are cumbersome and fill the rear footwells but can quickly and easily be removed should I need more space. I don't really want to get into butchering parcel shelves. Especially as I don't actually have one for this car (I've borrowed the Mk1s for the moment but that's missing one of the crossbars).

So, I've got some sort of sound at least. Not brilliant but not dreadful either. Not sure I can really be doing with spending money on more speakers so not sure what to do about the duff one at the moment.
