Re: Day out

Post by merlyn »

Finally got my shifts for the weekend of the 29th and I am free all weekend. I would like to come along to this, not too far and I will bring either one or both of my sons who should enjoy the museum. Does anyone know if the museum has a good cafe or is it sensible to bring our own lunch?

There is a coffee shop in the entrance. Sells, erm, coffee as well as milkshakes, hot chocolates, sarnies and according to the museums website the best cakes in Coventry! I'm up in Lancaster so we could travel down in convoy if you like. Meet at Keele or Stafford svcs.

That would be good, my youngest son would think it was great fun. Never done a convoy before, just followed people occasionally when I have been lost! Keele is the closest to me, I live 2 miles off J16.

Ok chaps. I've spoken to the museum and at the moment there are parking restrictions in place until September because of something called the Olympics! The lovely lady at the museum (Anne ) said we can use the staff car park if we wish. I explained that there will be a max of around 10 cars attending and she said she would contact Coventry Council re parking restrictions and she will get back to me. So watch this space as they say. At the worst it might mean taking a quick photo in front of the building and then speeding round the back, before the parking nazis, erm, sorry I mean attendants show up. I will post up here as soon as I hear back from the museum.

The museum has been back in touch and unfortunately we cannot park in front due to Olympic events ( ), however 10 parking spaces have been reserved for us in the staff car park. Directions-: silver street, off junction 1 of Coventry ring road. There is a special exhibition on at the time entitled Pedals to Medals, which celebrates the history of competitive cycling (one for you Mike).
I've booked us for attending from 12 onwards and as stated before admission is free. There is a coffee shop in the foyer that also serves snacks etc. Should be an enjoyable day out. [-o< :)

it should be remembered that Coventry is hosting some or more of the football at the RICOH/City of Coventry arena. I would strongly recommend you do NOT try to enter Coventry from Junction 3 of the M6 (this will effect northerners and possibly Tim dependant on which way you come), use Junction 2, and try to avoid the A4600 (it runs through an area called Ball Hill, known to local drivers as 'Ball Ache Hill' for a good reason).

I don't rate the cafe TBH, though it has had a bit of work since i last ate there. Directly opposite is a Weatherspoons which is quite good, but just down the road 100 yards is a terrible looking pub that does just the most fantastic food ever.

The museum is in the city, and it is surrounded by the most ludicrous road system (not including the ring road), i'd make sure you have a paper map with the one way system drawn on if your not in convoy.

Nearest one to me is Michael Wood, just north of J14 (Falfield)

Alternatively, if you get off at J13 and turn right towards Stroud, there's a Little Chef, Travelodge and Shell garage about a 1/4 mile up the road.
