New stats on registered cars

Post by hilarystone »

The latest figures for the number of taxed and Sorned Bs are now available from the DFT and presented on How Many Left for the first quarter of 2012. Overall the there are 72 fewer taxed BXs than there were in the last quarter of 2011. This is to be expected but the shocking news, at least to me, is that there were now only 25 16Vs taxed in the first quarter of 2012 compared to 36 in the last quarter of 2011 and that the the number of Sorned 16Vs also dropped by 7 in the same period... That's a 25% reduction in taxed 16Vs.

Nearly 1/2 the GTi Hurricanes seemed to have vanished in the past year, and total figures for taxed and SORN have dropped below 2000.

Unfortunatly many 16v's are still be pillaged for their engines and will continue that way until all the ones left are in enthusiats hands. Rover Sd1 V8's are still going the same way, a well known car was broken as someone was building yet another kitcar with its mechanicals, and their numbers are down to the hundreds, which considering they made over 300000 is quite scary
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

It's been the same with Ami Supers and GS's - most or the surviving Super chassis are under 2CV's and Dyanes, and a lot of them have GSA engines and boxes in. Last year a perfectly good GS was scrapped so its engine could go in a light aircraft, and a couple of years previously a very rare early GSA with a GS interior was scrapped so its gauges could go in a lomax.

Still, it could be worse - there's someone in one of the cycle clubs I'm involved in who thinks less than perfect examples of certain bikes should be cut up so that the ones that are left will be worth more

Try not to be to disheartened!

My last BX before I left the UK went to live in France and apparently is still going. Add to that the TXD is an English import to NZ. So some may or may not have gone overseas to new lives.

Mikes comments remind me that back in the 80's prices of Classic cars rose and put them beyond the reach of many enthusiasts. As a result it became viable to restore them. Cars that would have been scrapped were saved. If a car is worth nothing there is no motivation to look after it.... This is what has happened to the GSA. An interesting statistic is the number of cars of a given make/model owned by members of single marque non-territorial clubs. I am amazed at the numbers that seemed to be owned by one person....
1974 GS Birotor, 1972 GS 1220 FIA Gp 2, 1992 BX 16 TGS, 1951 Velo-Solex, 1953 NSU Max 250, 1972 Honda ST50, Daughter has 1990 BX14 TGE
Previously owned include 1983 BX14RE Leader, Porsche 924, 1972 Porsche 911T, 1973 Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 (FIA Group 4), 1974 Porsche Carrera RS 3.0 (FIA Group 4 ex Le Mans), 1969 911 T/R (FIA Group 3 ex Le Mans), 1981 Porsche Group B 3.3 litre World Endurance Championship, 1991 Footwork Arrows Porsche Formula 1 (ex Alboreto & Caffi),

After a quick check on 'how many left, I own 2% of the Citroen Dyanes currently on SORN, and I have a friend who must own 3 or 4% of the Dyanes registered

I believe that I may actually be in a minority as the owner of just 1 GS - most G series owners I've met turn out to have several.
