Diesel oil leak..

Post by themildbunch »

Hi -

Did the cambelt, and a few jobs on our TZD auto yesterday..

Noticed and oil leak around the back on the timing side - oil around the top of the waterpump and dripping on the CV boot which had split recently and failed the MOT..

Image

As usual it's hard to see the location but the oil had dribbled down and pooled a little on the bottom cambelt cover but not got on the belt - Is there a likely culprit here? I may just change the cam cover seal as a starter..

Has the front crankshaft seal in your picture been leaking or the front camshaft seal above, it does fire the oil that way then runs down? I always change the front crank seal and camshaft seal as a matter of course when doing a timing belt.

Hi - no, it really didn't look like it was coming from either of those seals but somewhere else and dripping down around the back of the engine.. Although you're right it's a good idea to change those seals - I was a little reluctant as I had no socket or anything nothing big enough to push the seal in squarely and I though it best to leave alone until the next time....

Oh, just been worrying myself having read cases of XUD headgasket oil leaks...

Hi while you are in there it's always good to check the cam cover gasket as they always seem to weep/leak after a while. The three bolts tend to slacken off a bit.
You may well have noticed but well worth checking the bottom radiator hose as it can get rubbed through by the anti roll bar (end.) Yours is marked. A piece of hose slit lengthwise and put round the hose and held with a couple of cable ties or what ever works.

as Kevin says
cam and crank seals,

have a look at the back of the cam sprocket and crank pully, if those seals are leaking there will be oil on the rear of thos pulleys

I had this on my current TGD Auto, the ARB bolts were very slightly loose allowing the roll bar to move from side to side. I used one-pack sealant to stick a piece of hose over as you suggest.

Yes I really should had changed those but ran out of time as usual and had to get back home! There wasn't any oil on the rear of the pulleys so it's hopefully the valve cover gasket.

You can't see in the picture but the bottom hose has been repaired in the past and is a two part sleeved one now held up to the body with cable ties... I did replace the droplinks that were very rattly after that photo was taken but will check for any rubbing and that's a great idea about the extra hose to stop rubbing.
