Bonnet question!

Post by cavmad »

Can someone please explain what models had `short nosed` bonnets, what models had `long nosed`, whether they`re interchangeable and finally (sorry) which had plastic and which had metal bonnets?
Thanks in advance,

Short nosed bonnets, GTIs TZDs some Meterors AFAIK interchangeable as long as you swap the plastic grille too, metal bonnets were produced on alternate thursday mornings excluding bank holidays :)
Did you win the 1.9 td?

Thanks Stewart, and yes, I DId win the TZD.
Huge battle in the bidding war though. One member of this forum had me sweating for a brief moment (actually, make that had me laughing for a moment) and someone else tried to jump in near the end. Obviously didn`t realise he was up against Mr Determined here did he :?: :D
Anyhow, the good news about winning it was slightly deflated by the price I`ve had to pay.
A rip-roaring, wallet busting all-time Cavmad record, of, err, £36  Incidentally when it`s up and running I challenge you to a dual on the southerly!

Safe to say TD's have a plastic bonnet, late build non turbos have a steel bonnet. After that as Oily says, depend on the day of the week time of the month..........

Mk 1 diesels had steel bonnets to reduce the engine noise getting out of the engine (personally i think the sound of the XUD is very unique and i love it). They made rather more bonnets than they needed so the spares where fitted to later models. I dont think anyone has ever checked ORGA numbers to identify when they started putting metal bonnets on, but it seems to be around Kreg onwards. The 16v's are a bit of a mixed bag towards the end of the line.

Billy, fitting your scooby bonnet to the 1.9td wont be any problem! :D

My 50/50 owned maroon Mk1 19TRD is currently sporting a blue Mk2 bonnet that blatantly doesn't fit and in fact it has damaged the plastic windscreen vent panel :x I imagine if it originally had a steel one, it prob got a big dent in it or summat... and this bonnet is all they could find to replace it with...

I agree about the noise of the XUD engine. But it's so smooth - the noise disappears at cruising speed and you forget it's a diesel! Pics soon guys, I promise - when I find my camera

I thought I was the only one that liked the sound of the diesel. Now I know I'm in the right place...
